Sura ‘Abasa

The Manifest Quran 80

Introduction of Surah

‘Abasa is the 80th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘He Displeased’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 42 verses, 233 words, 533 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 24th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Najm. Its title reflects Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) being displeased at a blind man when he interrupted the Holy Prophet’s (blessings and peace be upon him) discourse while he (blessings and peace be upon him) was expounding the Qur’anic message to the leaders of the idolaters. The sura goes on to stress the noble, high and pure nature of the Qur’an before concluding with a survey of some of the gifts which God Almighty has bestowed upon hu-mans, and a warning about the Day of Resurrection when the Deafening Blast of the Trumpet will come to pass.
