Sura Fatir

The Manifest Quran 35

Introduction of Surah

Fatir is the 35th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Originator’. It derives its name from the 1st verse, and the reference is to God Almighty Himself. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 45 verses, 770 words, 3,133 letters, and 5 segments. It is the 43rd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Furqan. The sura opens by praising God, the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, and the One who has made the angels His envoys with wings. This is the only sura that describes some aspects of the physical appearance of the angels, which has led some commentators to title this Sura ‘The Angels’. This chapter focuses upon the Oneness of God, as the only Creator and Sustainer of the world, contrasting God’s power with the claims the polytheists make for their idols. It further mentions that Hellfire awaits the disbelievers, whereas the gardens of Eden await the true believers. The sura further describes the idol gods, which the disbelievers associate with God, as being incapable of any creation. The sura concludes with a statement that God Almighty is the One Who maintains the heavens and the earth, warning the disbelievers and offering them time for repentance before the Day of Judgement arrives.
