Sura Fussilat/ Ha-Mim al-Sajda

The Manifest Quran 41

Introduction of Surah

Fussilat is the 41st sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Distinctly Explained’, and derives its name from verse 3. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 54 verses, 796 words, 3,350 letters, and 6 segments. It is the 61st sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura Ghafir. The sura is also called ‘Ha-Mim al-Sajda’ because of the two Mysterious Letters of the Qur’an, which constitute the first verse of this sura. It should not be confused with sura 32, which also bears the title ‘al-Sajda’. Moreover, the sura relates the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the different periods of formation and evolution, including the preliminary smoky state of the universe. The chapter emphasises the themes of the Oneness of God, and recalls the fate of ‘Ad and Thamud. It also describes the trials of the Day of Judgement where the bodily organs will testify against the wrongdoer, leading to evil rewards for the wrongdoers, and pleasant rewards for the righteous. The sura, relating the qualities of true believers, further explains that good and evil cannot be equal; whoever performs good deeds benefits himself and whoever commits evil harms himself. Therefore, the sura urge believers to practice respectful speech and noble conduct even with dis-believers. In the end, the sura describes the failure of the polytheists and those who deny the Truth on the Day of Judgement. The sura concludes with the statement that God has placed His signs in the whole universe as well as within human lives and bodies. Therefore, whoever reflects upon them finds the Ultimate truth.
