Sura Muhammad

The Manifest Quran 47

Introduction of Surah

Muhammad is the 47th sura of the Qur’an, titled with the Holy Prophet’s name ‘Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him)’. The title is derived from the 2nd verse, which refers to the truth revealed upon the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 38 verses, 539 words, 2,349 letters, and 4 segments. It is the 95th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Hadid. The sura begins by warning that the deeds of those who disbelieve and hinder others from the path of truth will be in vain. Following this, the sura details a set of instructions to the believers about the rules and etiquettes of fighting, and regulations regarding the prisoners of war and their freedoms, either as an act of grace or by ransom. The sura also notably states that those martyred in the cause of God Almighty will be admitted into Paradise. Moving forward, the sura provides warnings to the disbelievers and describes the charming rewards for the righteous believers. It follows with a detailed description of Paradise, where rivers of fresh water, milk, pure wine, and delicious honey will flow, contrasting the boiling water fed to the sinful in Hell. The sura also states the qualities of the hypocrites, including mockery, following low desires, cowardice, corruption, temptation and cutting kinship ties. As the sura concludes it describes the reason behind testing the faith of the believers; to establish their steadfastness on the right path and to make this known. The sura ends with a note that God Almighty invites people to give charity and donate from their wealth in the way of God, whereas, those who resent and act miserly cause harm to themselves.
