al-Dukhan is the 44th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Smoke’. The sura derives its name from verses 10, which talk of a day when the heavens will bring forth clear smoke completely covering the people. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 59 verses, 346 words, 1,431 letters, and 3 segments. It is the 64th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Zukhruf. The sura begins with two Mysterious Letters of the Qur’an, stating that its revelation occurred on a blessed night, in which every matter of wisdom was distinctly ordained. After a brief affirmation of God’s Omnipotence, the sura rebukes the deniers who doubt the punishment of the Hereafter. Then the chapter continues with references to Pharaoh, the deliverance of the Children of Israel and the divine purpose behind the creation. The sura also mentions the Tree of al-Zaqqum and other pains of Hell, here called ‘al-Jahim’, as well as the pleasures of Paradise for the righteous. In the end, the sura states that the Holy Qur’an is easy to understand for people who are mindful.
