Sura al-Dhariyat

The Manifest Quran 51

Introduction of Surah

al-Dhariyat is the 51st sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Scattering Winds’. It derives its title from the 1st verse, which begins with the oath ‘By the scattering winds…’, one of the bounties of God Almighty. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 60 verses, 360 words, 1,287 letters, and three segments. It is the 67th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Ahqaf. After affirming the promise of the Day of Judgement to be truthful, the sura warns the evildoers of the punishment of Hell and gives glad tidings of the joys of Paradise to the virtuous. The sura proceeds with a list of the qualities of the people of spiritual excellence and refers to the account of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham [peace be upon him]), Prophet Lut (Lot [peace be upon him]) and his angel guests. Later reference is made to Prophet Musa (Moses [peace be upon him]) and the destruction of Pharaoh, and to the punishments which befell the tribes of ‘Ad and Thamud as well as the people of Prophet Nuh (Noah [peace be upon him]). Following this, the sura explains that the jinn and the humans were created for God’s worship. In the end, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) is urged to continue reminding and warning the disbelievers about the Promised Day.
