Introduction of Surah
al-Ahqaf is the 46th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Sand-Hills’. It derives its name from verse 21, which refers to the sand-hills where Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) and the tribe of ‘Ad used to live. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 35 verses, 344 words, 2,595 letters, and 4 segments. It is the 66th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Jathiya. The sura references the deniers of the Holy Qur’an, who used to say it was pure magic or an ancient fabrication. The chapter further describes the pagan arrogance towards God; the stance of the believers and the disbelievers, with a particular reference to Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) and his deviant people who ended up in utter destruction. Furthermore, this sura relates a notable story of the jinn who came to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) and upon listening to the Qur’an quietly, became believers and returned to their fellow jinn as warners. The sura concludes with advice to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to endure patiently like the Messengers of Firm Resolve (peace be upon them) once did.
