Sura al-‘Alaq

The Manifest Quran 96

Introduction of Surah

al-‘Alaq is the 96th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Clinging Mass’, and takes its name from the 2nd verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 19 verses, 92 words, 280 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 1st sura in chronological order. The sura begins by describing God Almighty’s creation of man from the clinging mass in the mother’s womb. The sura has an important place in the Islamic faith, culture and legacy, since it was the first to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) in Hira’ in 610 ce. Verses 1–5 are the first revelation of the Qur’an, which begins with an injunction to ‘read in the Name of God’, emphasising the significance of knowledge and science in the Islamic faith. The sura further condemns those who prevent others from practising religion, and concludes with challenging those who invoke their idol gods to protect them from God Almighty’s punishment.
