Sura al-Anbiya’

21:1. The (time of) reckoning for the people has drawn closer, yet they are turning away heedlessly.

اقترب للناس حسابهم وهم في غفلة معرضون

21:2. Whatever new Reminder comes to them from their Lord, they only listen to it playfully,

ما يأتيهم من ذكر من ربهم محدث إلا استمعوه وهم يلعبون

21:3. with their hearts (totally) distracted. Those who are unjust secretly whisper: ‘Is not this (man) just a human being like yourselves? Will you surrender to (his) magic while you see clearly?’

لاهية قلوبهم وأسروا النجوى الذين ظلموا هل هذا إلا بشر مثلكم أفتأتون السحر وأنتم تبصرون

21:4. He said: ‘My Lord knows every word (spoken) in the heaven and the earth. And He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.’

قال ربي يعلم القول في السماء والأرض وهو السميع العليم

21:5. Yet they said: ‘(These Reminders are) confused dreams! Rather, he has fabricated it! Rather, he is a poet! Let him bring us a sign like the former (messengers) were sent (with signs).’

بل قالوا أضغاث أحلام بل افتراه بل هو شاعر فليأتنا بآية كما أرسل الأولون

21:6. Not a (single) town We destroyed before them ever believed (after receiving the signs). Will these (pagans) then now believe?

ما آمنت قبلهم من قرية أهلكناها أفهم يؤمنون

21:7. We did not send (the messengers) before you, except men to whom We revealed. So ask the People of the Reminder if you do not know.

وما أرسلنا قبلك إلا رجالا نوحي إليهم فاسألوا أهل الذكر إن كنتم لا تعلمون

21:8. And We did not make them bodies (of such nature) that would not eat food, nor were they to abide forever.

وما جعلناهم جسدا لا يأكلون الطعام وما كانوا خالدين

21:9. Then We fulfilled the promise to them. So We delivered them and whomever We willed, and We destroyed the transgressors.

ثم صدقناهم الوعد فأنجيناهم ومن نشاء وأهلكنا المسرفين

21:10. Indeed, We have (now) revealed to you a Book in which there is your Reminder. Will you still not understand?

لقد أنزلنا إليكم كتابا فيه ذكركم أفلا تعقلون

21:11. And how many towns engaged in wrongdoing have We demolished and (then) raised other people after them?

وكم قصمنا من قرية كانت ظالمة وأنشأنا بعدها قوما آخرين

21:12. So, when they felt Our Might (coming upon them), see how they tried to escape.

فلما أحسوا بأسنا إذا هم منها يركضون

21:13. (The angels said:) ‘Do not try to escape (now)! Return to the pleasures you were given to enjoy and to your dwellings. So that you may be questioned!’

لا تركضوا وارجعوا إلى ما أترفتم فيه ومساكنكم لعلكم تسألون

21:14. They said: ‘Woe to us! We have, indeed, been wrongdoers!’

قالوا يا ويلنا إنا كنا ظالمين

21:15. This remained their cry until We made them a cut-off field, extinct (like burnt ashes).

فما زالت تلك دعواهم حتى جعلناهم حصيدا خامدين

21:16. We did not create the heavens, earth, or whatever is between them just for play.

وما خلقنا السماء والأرض وما بينهما لاعبين

21:17. Had We wished to have some entertainment, We would have indeed found it in Our presence if We were to do (so).

لو أردنا أن نتخذ لهوا لاتخذناه من لدنا إن كنا فاعلين

21:18. Rather, We cast truth against falsehood, and it crushes its head. And behold, it (i.e. falsehood) vanishes away. And woe to you for what you allege (about Allah).

بل نقذف بالحق على الباطل فيدمغه فإذا هو زاهق ولكم الويل مما تصفون

21:19. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who remain in His presence are neither arrogant to worship Him, nor do they get tired.

وله من في السماوات والأرض ومن عنده لا يستكبرون عن عبادته ولا يستحسرون

21:20. They glorify (Him) night and day (and) they never take a momentary break.

يسبحون الليل والنهار لا يفترون

21:21. Have they taken gods from the earth, who raise (the dead) alive?

أم اتخذوا آلهة من الأرض هم ينشرون

21:22. Had there been gods in them (i.e. the heavens and the earth) other than Allah, they would surely have collapsed. So, Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above what they attribute to Him.

لو كان فيهما آلهة إلا الله لفسدتا فسبحان الله رب العرش عما يصفون

21:23. He cannot be questioned about what He does, but they (all) shall be questioned (about their actions).

لا يسأل عما يفعل وهم يسألون

21:24. Have they taken gods besides Him? Say: ‘Produce your evidence! This is a reminder for those with me and a reminder for those before me.’ Instead, most of them do not know the truth, so they are disregardful.

أم اتخذوا من دونه آلهة قل هاتوا برهانكم هذا ذكر من معي وذكر من قبلي بل أكثرهم لا يعلمون الحق فهم معرضون

21:25. We never sent any messenger before you, but We revealed to him: ‘There is no god except Me.’ So worship Me.

وما أرسلنا من قبلك من رسول إلا نوحي إليه أنه لا إله إلا أنا فاعبدون

21:26. And they say: ‘The Most-Compassionate (Lord) has taken (angels as His) children.’ Glory be to Him. Instead, they are (His) honoured servants.

وقالوا اتخذ الرحمن ولدا سبحانه بل عباد مكرمون

21:27. They do not precede Him in speech, but they act by His command.

لا يسبقونه بالقول وهم بأمره يعملون

21:28. He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not intercede except for him with whom He is pleased. And they (themselves) are apprehensive in fear of Him.

يعلم ما بين أيديهم وما خلفهم ولا يشفعون إلا لمن ارتضى وهم من خشيته مشفقون

21:29. Whosoever among them says, ‘I am a god besides Him’, we shall reward such (a person) with Hell. That is how We recompense the wrongdoers.

ومن يقل منهم إني إله من دونه فذلك نجزيه جهنم كذلك نجزي الظالمين

21:30. Have the disbelievers not considered that the heavens and the earth were joined together (at one time), and then We split them apart? And We originated (the life of) all living organisms (on earth) from water. Will they still not believe (after learning these facts mentioned in the Qur’an)?

أولم ير الذين كفروا أن السماوات والأرض كانتا رتقا ففتقناهما وجعلنا من الماء كل شيء حي أفلا يؤمنون

21:31. And We set firm mountains in the earth, lest it should shake with them (while rotating in its orbit). And We made on this (earth) broad ways so that they might find routes (to different destinations).

وجعلنا في الأرض رواسي أن تميد بهم وجعلنا فيها فجاجا سبلا لعلهم يهتدون

21:32. We made the upper spheres of the earth a secure roof.* Yet they are disregardful of its signs.

* These upper spheres protect the earth’s inhabitants from the harmful waves and radiation coming from space.

وجعلنا السماء سقفا محفوظا وهم عن آياتها معرضون

21:33. He is the One Who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon—each moving in an orbit.

وهو الذي خلق الليل والنهار والشمس والقمر كل في فلك يسبحون

21:34. And We have not granted eternity to any human before you (in this world). So, if you die, will they live forever?

وما جعلنا لبشر من قبلك الخلد أفإن مت فهم الخالدون

21:35. Every soul is sure to taste death, and We try you (all) with evil and with good as a test. And to Us shall you be returned.

كل نفس ذائقة الموت ونبلوكم بالشر والخير فتنة وإلينا ترجعون

21:36. And whenever the disbelievers see you, they only take you for mockery, (saying:) ‘Is this the one who speaks (ill) of your gods?’ But it is they who deny the remembrance of the Most-Compassionate (Lord).

وإذا رآك الذين كفروا إن يتخذونك إلا هزوا أهذا الذي يذكر آلهتكم وهم بذكر الرحمن هم كافرون

21:37. Human being was created hasty (and impatient by his disposition). I shall soon show you My signs. So do not ask Me to hasten (the punishment).

خلق الإنسان من عجل سأوريكم آياتي فلا تستعجلون

21:38. And they say: ‘When will this promise (of punishment) be fulfilled if you are truthful?’

ويقولون متى هذا الوعد إن كنتم صادقين

21:39. If only the disbelievers knew that a time would come when they would not be able to stop the Fire from (burning) their faces and their backs, nor would they be helped (then they would not seek to hasten it).

لو يعلم الذين كفروا حين لا يكفون عن وجوههم النار ولا عن ظهورهم ولا هم ينصرون

21:40. Instead, it will come upon them suddenly and confound them. So, neither will they be able to avert it nor be granted respite.

بل تأتيهم بغتة فتبهتهم فلا يستطيعون ردها ولا هم ينظرون

21:41. And certainly messengers were mocked before you. But those who ridiculed them were overtaken by what they used to mock.

ولقد استهزئ برسل من قبلك فحاق بالذين سخروا منهم ما كانوا به يستهزؤون

21:42. Say: ‘Who can guard you by night and day from (the punishment of) the Most-Compassionate (Lord)?’ Instead, they are disregardful of their Lord’s remembrance.

قل من يكلؤكم بالليل والنهار من الرحمن بل هم عن ذكر ربهم معرضون

21:43. Do they have gods besides Us who can defend them (from the punishment)? They can neither help themselves nor will they be given protection against Us.

أم لهم آلهة تمنعهم من دوننا لا يستطيعون نصر أنفسهم ولا هم منا يصحبون

21:44. Instead, We provided enjoyment to these (Meccans) and their fathers until they lived on for a long time. Do they not see how We are shrinking the land (under their control) from its borders? So, are they the ones who will prevail?

بل متعنا هؤلاء وآباءهم حتى طال عليهم العمر أفلا يرون أنا نأتي الأرض ننقصها من أطرافها أفهم الغالبون

21:45. Say: ‘I only warn you through revelation.’ But the deaf will not hear the call whenever they are warned.

قل إنما أنذركم بالوحي ولا يسمع الصم الدعاء إذا ما ينذرون

21:46. Yet if a (minor) breath of your Lord’s punishment touches them, they will surely say: ‘Woe to us! Truly, we have been wrongdoers.’

ولئن مستهم نفحة من عذاب ربك ليقولن يا ويلنا إنا كنا ظالمين

21:47. And We shall set up the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection. And no soul shall be wronged in the least. Even if it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, We shall produce it, and We suffice as Reckoners.

ونضع الموازين القسط ليوم القيامة فلا تظلم نفس شيئا وإن كان مثقال حبة من خردل أتينا بها وكفى بنا حاسبين

21:48. And indeed, We gave Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) the standard (to distinguish between right and wrong), a light and a reminder for those who are God-conscious.

ولقد آتينا موسى وهارون الفرقان وضياء وذكرا للمتقين

21:49. Those who fear their Lord without seeing, and they are apprehensive of the Hour.

الذين يخشون ربهم بالغيب وهم من الساعة مشفقون

21:50. This (Qur’an) is a blessed Reminder that We have revealed. Are you (all) going to deny it?

وهذا ذكر مبارك أنزلناه أفأنتم له منكرون

21:51. We had indeed bestowed upon Ibrahim (Abraham) rectitude of his conduct long before, and We knew him.

ولقد آتينا إبراهيم رشده من قبل وكنا به عالمين

21:52. When he said to his (foster) father and his people: ‘What are these idols to which you are so devoted (in worship)?’

إذ قال لأبيه وقومه ما هذه التماثيل التي أنتم لها عاكفون

21:53. They said: ‘We found our fathers worshipping them.’

قالوا وجدنا آباءنا لها عابدين

21:54. He said: ‘Surely, you and your fathers have been in clear error.’

قال لقد كنتم أنتم وآباؤكم في ضلال مبين

21:55. They said: ‘Have you brought us the truth, or are you just joking?’

قالوا أجئتنا بالحق أم أنت من اللاعبين

21:56. He said: ‘Instead, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence. And I am among those who bear witness to that.

قال بل ربكم رب السماوات والأرض الذي فطرهن وأنا على ذلكم من الشاهدين

21:57. By Allah, I shall surely plan against your idols after you have gone away, turning your backs.’

وتالله لأكيدن أصنامكم بعد أن تولوا مدبرين

21:58. Then he broke them all into pieces—except the biggest of them—so they might return to it.

فجعلهم جذاذا إلا كبيرا لهم لعلهم إليه يرجعون

21:59. They said: ‘Who has done this to our gods? Surely, he is among the wrongdoers.’

قالوا من فعل هذا بآلهتنا إنه لمن الظالمين

21:60. Some people said: ‘We heard a young man talking about them. He is called Ibrahim (Abraham).’

قالوا سمعنا فتى يذكرهم يقال له إبراهيم

21:61. They said: ‘Bring him before the eyes of the people so that they may bear witness (against him).’

قالوا فأتوا به على أعين الناس لعلهم يشهدون

21:62. They said: ‘Was it you who did this to our gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)?’

قالوا أأنت فعلت هذا بآلهتنا يا إبراهيم

21:63. He said: ‘Surely, this one—the chief of them—has done it. So ask them (i.e. the broken idols) if they can speak.’

قال بل فعله كبيرهم هذا فاسألوهم إن كانوا ينطقون

21:64. Then they turned to themselves and said (to one another): ‘Indeed, it is you who are the wrongdoers.’

فرجعوا إلى أنفسهم فقالوا إنكم أنتم الظالمون

21:65. Then they were made to hang their heads (in shame). They said, ‘You certainly know that they cannot speak.’

ثم نكسوا على رؤوسهم لقد علمت ما هؤلاء ينطقون

21:66. He said: ‘Do you then worship something besides Allah, which can neither benefit you nor harm you?

قال أفتعبدون من دون الله ما لا ينفعكم شيئا ولا يضركم

21:67. Shame on you and on what you worship besides Allah! Do you not yet understand?’

أف لكم ولما تعبدون من دون الله أفلا تعقلون

21:68. They said: ‘Burn him and help your gods if you are to take action!’

قالوا حرقوه وانصروا آلهتكم إن كنتم فاعلين

21:69. We said: ‘O fire, be (comfortingly) cool and safe for Ibrahim (Abraham)!’

قلنا يا نار كوني بردا وسلاما على إبراهيم

21:70. They had intended an evil plot against him, but We made them the biggest losers.

وأرادوا به كيدا فجعلناهم الأخسرين

21:71. And We rescued him and Lut* towards the land We had blessed for all nations.

* Prophet Lut was the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim, the son of his brother Haran, from Mesopotamia (Iraq).

ونجيناه ولوطا إلى الأرض التي باركنا فيها للعالمين

21:72. And We gave him (i.e. Abraham) Ishaq (Isaac), and Ya‘qub (Jacob) as an added gift, and each of them We made righteous.

ووهبنا له إسحق ويعقوب نافلة وكلا جعلنا صالحين

21:73. We made them leaders, guiding (people) by Our command. And We revealed to them the performance of virtuous deeds, the maintenance of prayers and the giving of charity (alms). And they were (always) Our devoted worshippers.

وجعلناهم أئمة يهدون بأمرنا وأوحينا إليهم فعل الخيرات وإقام الصلاة وإيتاء الزكاة وكانوا لنا عابدين

21:74. And (as for) Lut, We bestowed upon him (the wisdom of) judgement and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town whose people used to commit acts of indecency. Indeed, they were shameless people with an evil character.

ولوطا آتيناه حكما وعلما ونجيناه من القرية التي كانت تعمل الخبائث إنهم كانوا قوم سوء فاسقين

21:75. And We caused him to enter Our Mercy. Indeed, he was among the righteous.

وأدخلناه في رحمتنا إنه من الصالحين

21:76. And (remember) Nuh (Noah), when he called (his Lord) long before. So We responded to him and rescued him and his family from the great disaster.

ونوحا إذ نادى من قبل فاستجبنا له فنجيناه وأهله من الكرب العظيم

21:77. And We helped him against the people who rejected Our Signs. Indeed, they were evil people. So We drowned them all.

ونصرناه من القوم الذين كذبوا بآياتنا إنهم كانوا قوم سوء فأغرقناهم أجمعين

21:78. And (remember) Dawud (David) and Sulayman (Solomon) when they both gave the judgement concerning the crop field when the sheep of a tribe entered into it by night (and destroyed it). And We were witness to their decision.

وداوود وسليمان إذ يحكمان في الحرث إذ نفشت فيه غنم القوم وكنا لحكمهم شاهدين

21:79. And We gave its better understanding to Sulayman (Solomon). And to all, We blessed sound judgement and knowledge. And We made the mountains and the birds subservient to glorify (Our praises) together with Dawud (David). And We were the doers (of such things).

ففهمناها سليمان وكلا آتينا حكما وعلما وسخرنا مع داوود الجبال يسبحن والطير وكنا فاعلين

21:80. And We taught him the art of making (armoured) garments for you to protect you in your battle. Will you then be grateful?

وعلمناه صنعة لبوس لكم لتحصنكم من بأسكم فهل أنتم شاكرون

21:81. And (We made) the stormy wind (subservient) for Sulayman (Solomon), which pursued its course by his command towards the land which We had blessed. And We are the knower of all things.

ولسليمان الريح عاصفة تجري بأمره إلى الأرض التي باركنا فيها وكنا بكل شيء عالمين

21:82. And among the devils (some were made subservient) who dove for him (into the seas) and accomplished tasks other than that. And We were watchful over them.

ومن الشياطين من يغوصون له ويعملون عملا دون ذلك وكنا لهم حافظين

21:83. And (remember) Ayyub (Job) when he called his Lord: ‘Indeed suffering has befallen me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’

وأيوب إذ نادى ربه أني مسني الضر وأنت أرحم الراحمين

21:84. So We responded to him and removed his suffering. And We gave him (back) his family, along with others like them, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers.

فاستجبنا له فكشفنا ما به من ضر وآتيناه أهله ومثلهم معهم رحمة من عندنا وذكرى للعابدين

21:85. And (remember) Isma‘il (Ishmael), Idris (Enoch) and Dhu al-Kifl; each of them was among the patient.

وإسماعيل وإدريس وذا الكفل كل من الصابرين

21:86. And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were among the righteous.

وأدخلناهم في رحمتنا إنهم من الصالحين

21:87. And (remember) Dhu al-Nun*, when he went away angrily, thinking that We would not put him to hardship (on his journey). Then he called (Us) in the darkness: ‘There is no god except You. Glory be to You! I have indeed been among those who wrong (their souls).’

* His name is Yunus b. Matta (Jonah), and he was the Prophet who was swallowed by a whale.

وذا النون إذ ذهب مغاضبا فظن أن لن نقدر عليه فنادى في الظلمات أن لا إله إلا أنت سبحانك إني كنت من الظالمين

21:88. So We responded to him and delivered him from grief. And that is how We save the believers.

فاستجبنا له ونجيناه من الغم وكذلك ننجي المؤمنين

21:89. And (remember) Zakariyya (Zachariah) when he called to his Lord: ‘My Lord! Do not leave me alone (i.e. childless), though You are the best of inheritors.’

وزكريا إذ نادى ربه رب لا تذرني فردا وأنت خير الوارثين

21:90. So We responded to him and gave him Yahya (John), and We cured (the infertility of) his wife for him. Indeed, they were always quick in (performing) good deeds. And they would supplicate Us, in hope and in fear, and they were always humble before Us.

فاستجبنا له ووهبنا له يحيى وأصلحنا له زوجه إنهم كانوا يسارعون في الخيرات ويدعوننا رغبا ورهبا وكانوا لنا خاشعين

21:91. And (remember Mary) who guarded her chastity. So We breathed in her Our Spirit, and made her and her son a sign for all nations.

والتي أحصنت فرجها فنفخنا فيها من روحنا وجعلناها وابنها آية للعالمين

21:92. Indeed, this community of yours is one community. And I am your Lord. So worship Me (alone).

إن هذه أمتكم أمة واحدة وأنا ربكم فاعبدون

21:93. And they fragmented their religion between themselves (into sects). All (of them) will return to Us.

وتقطعوا أمرهم بينهم كل إلينا راجعون

21:94. So, whoever does righteous deeds and is a believer, there shall be no denial of his effort, and We are indeed writing (it) down for him.

فمن يعمل من الصالحات وهو مؤمن فلا كفران لسعيه وإنا له كاتبون

21:95. And it is forbidden for (the people of) any town which We have destroyed (to return to the world). They shall never return,

وحرام على قرية أهلكناها أنهم لا يرجعون

21:96. till the time when Gog and Magog are let loose and race down from every elevated place,

حتى إذا فتحت يأجوج ومأجوج وهم من كل حدب ينسلون

21:97. and the true promise draws near (to its fulfilment), behold, the eyes of the disbelievers shall stare in horror, (and they will cry out:) ‘Woe to us! We have certainly been heedless to this (day)! Rather, we have been wrongdoers!’

واقترب الوعد الحق فإذا هي شاخصة أبصار الذين كفروا يا ويلنا قد كنا في غفلة من هذا بل كنا ظالمين

21:98. Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah shall be the fuel of Hell. You will (all) enter it.

إنكم وما تعبدون من دون الله حصب جهنم أنتم لها واردون

21:99. Had they been (true) gods, they would not have entered it. All of them will remain in it forever.

لو كان هؤلاء آلهة ما وردوها وكل فيها خالدون

21:100. For them, there shall be groaning in it, and they shall not hear anything (else) in it.

لهم فيها زفير وهم فيها لا يسمعون

21:101. Indeed, those for whom (the promise of) the best reward has gone forth from Us, it is they who will be kept away from it (i.e. Hell).

إن الذين سبقت لهم منا الحسنى أولئك عنها مبعدون

21:102. They will not hear (even) its slightest murmur. And they will remain forever in what their souls desire.

لا يسمعون حسيسها وهم في ما اشتهت أنفسهم خالدون

21:103. The Greatest Horror will not disturb them, and the angels will greet them, (saying:) ‘This is your Day, which you were promised.’

لا يحزنهم الفزع الأكبر وتتلقاهم الملائكة هذا يومكم الذي كنتم توعدون

21:104. On that Day, We shall roll up the sky like the rolling of writing scrolls. As We began the first creation, so shall We bring it back—a promise (binding) upon Us. Indeed, We are going to do it.

يوم نطوي السماء كطي السجل للكتب كما بدأنا أول خلق نعيده وعدا علينا إنا كنا فاعلين

21:105. And indeed, We wrote in al-Zabur (the Psalms) after the Reminder that My pious servants shall inherit the earth (in the Hereafter).

ولقد كتبنا في الزبور من بعد الذكر أن الأرض يرثها عبادي الصالحون

21:106. There is, indeed, in this, a clear message (of achieving the objective) for a worshipful people.

إن في هذا لبلاغا لقوم عابدين

21:107. And (Esteemed Prophet,) We did not send you but as a mercy for all (creatures of) the worlds.

وما أرسلناك إلا رحمة للعالمين

21:108. Say: ‘It is revealed to me that your God is only One God. So, are you going to submit (to Him)?’

قل إنما يوحى إلي أنما إلهكم إله واحد فهل أنتم مسلمون

21:109. But if they turn away, say: ‘I have proclaimed the message to you all equally. And I do not know (of my own accord) if what you have been promised is near or far.

فإن تولوا فقل آذنتكم على سواء وإن أدري أقريب أم بعيد ما توعدون

21:110. Indeed, He knows whatever is spoken openly, and He knows whatever you conceal.

إنه يعلم الجهر من القول ويعلم ما تكتمون

21:111. And I do not know (of my own accord) if this (delaying of the punishment) is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while.’

وإن أدري لعله فتنة لكم ومتاع إلى حين

21:112. He (the Esteemed Prophet) said: ‘My Lord! Pass the true judgement! Our Lord is the Most-Compassionate, the One Whose help is sought against what you ascribe (to Him).’

قال رب احكم بالحق وربنا الرحمن المستعان على ما تصفون
