Introduction of Surah
al-‘Ankabut is the 29th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Spider’, deriving its name from verse 41, which states that those who take helpers or protectors (awliya’) apart from God Almighty do not do better than the spider when it builds itself what is always the weakest of houses. This sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 69 verses, 980 words, 4,195 letters, and 7 segments. It is the 85th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Rum. The sura begins with three Mysterious Letters of the Holy Qur’an. After insisting that evil-doers will not escape God’s wrath and judgement, the sura mentions many of the prophets including Prophet Nuh (Noah [peace be upon him]), who spent 950 years with his people till the flood overtook them; Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham [peace be upon him]), who attempted to turn men away from idol worship; Prophet Lut (Lot [peace be upon him]), who similarly attempted to persuade his people away from shameful acts of immorality and Prophet Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him), sent to the people of Madyan to stop them from spreading financial corruption. The sura further mentions the miraculous status of Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) by conveying the Qur’an to the people who know very well that he had never learnt how to read or write a scripture or a sentence. Yet, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) recited such a magnificent book to them that no writer or poet could produce a like of its few verses. The sura concludes by ensuring those who fabricate lies against God and reject the truth will reach the abode of Hell, and those who strive hard in the path of God and perform good deeds will certainly be guided to His presence.
