Sura al-‘Asr

The Manifest Quran 103

Introduction of Surah

al-‘Asr is the 103rd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Time’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 3 verses, 14 words, 68 letters, and 1 segment. The sura is the 13th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Sharh. The title of the sura also refers to ‘The Declining Day’, or The Afternoon Prayer’. After beginning with the oath, the sura emphasises that man will be at a heavy loss unless he is among the believers and good doers. The sura thus makes the essential theological point that salvation depends on faith and righteous works. These three short verses of the sura contain the entire message of the Qur’an.
