al-Balad is the 90th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The City’, and takes its name from the 1st and 2nd verses. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 20 verses, 82 words, 320 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 35th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura Qaf. The sura begins with an oath of ‘The City’, referring to the city of Mecca. The sura mentions that a human being has been born with a life of hardship and has a choice to either follow the difficult path of charity and generosity or the of path of disbelief and arrogance, and where he is heedless of his fellow human beings. The sura ends with a warning about the Hellfire, contrasting the people of the right hand and those of the left.
