al-Bayyina is the 98th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Clear Evidence’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 8 verses, 74 words, 399 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 100th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Talaq. The ‘Clear Evidence’ may refer to the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), the Divine Book or the Day of Resurrection. The sura begins by describing the request of the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab) and the polytheists for a ‘clear proof’ of the Truth. The sura goes on to establish that the disbelievers in both groups will dwell in the Hellfire forever. And in the end, the sura describes that the believers and the righteous will be rewarded in the gardens of Eden.
