al-Buruj is the 85th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Constellations’, and takes its name from 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 22 verses, 109 words, 458 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 27th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Shams. The sura begins with a short series of oaths followed by a reference to ‘The Inhabitants of the Pit’, who have been variously identified. One ac-count sees them as the Christians of Najran, a border city of Yemen, persecuted by the Jewish ruler Dhu Nuwas, and the sura condemns the persecutor. Furthermore, the sura warns those who persecute the be-lievers and do not repent of burning in the Hellfire. In the end, the sura refers to the forces of Pharaoh and Thamud and declares that the Qur’an is a Glorious Book recorded in the Preserved Tablet.
