al-Falaq is the 113th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Explosion / The Day Break’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 5 verses, 23 words, 74 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 20th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Fil. It is the penultimate sura of the Qur’an. The first verse refers to ‘The Lord Who brought the universe into existence with an explosion’, or ‘The Lord of Daybreak’. The entire sura is a plea for protection by God Almighty from a variety of evils, including darkness, vicious witches and the envious. This sura and the next are the last two suras of the Qur’an, known as al-Mu‘awwidhatan, The Two Protectors; these are recited as a supplication to All-Mighty Allah for protection against many evils, including black magic, the evil eye and the evil of hatred, malice and jealousy.
