Introduction of Surah
al-Ghashiya is the 88th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Overwhelming Calamity’ or ‘The Enveloping Calamity’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 26 verses, 92 words, 381 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 68th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Dhariyat. The sura begins by mentioning the Day of Resurrection and its description. The sura notes that on that Day, those destined for the Hellfire will have tired and work-weary faces, in contrast to the happy faces of the inhabitants of Paradise. Then sura gives a delightful description of Paradise, and invites the people to reflect on the wonders of God Almighty’s Creation.

ﭩﭪﭫﭬ
88:2. Some faces on that Day will be humiliated,
وجوه يومئذ خاشعة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 2)
ﭭﭮﭯ
88:3. overstressed (and) exhausted.
عاملة ناصبة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 3)
ﭰﭱﭲﭳ
88:4. They will burn in a Blazing Fire,
تصلى نارا حامية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 4)
ﭴﭵﭶﭷﭸ
88:5. (and) made to drink from a boiling spring.
تسقى من عين آنية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 5)
ﮇﮈﮉﮊ
88:8. Some faces on that Day will be glowing blissfully,
وجوه يومئذ ناعمة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 8)
ﮋﮌﮍ
88:9. well pleased with their (righteous) endeavour.
لسعيها راضية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 9)
ﮎﮏﮐﮑ
88:10. (They will be) in a magnificent Paradise,
في جنة عالية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 10)
ﮒﮓﮔﮕﮖ
88:11. where they will not hear any vain talk.
لا تسمع فيها لاغية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 11)
ﮗﮘﮙﮚ
88:12. In it, there is a flowing spring,
فيها عين جارية
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 12)
ﮛﮜﮝﮞ
88:13. (and) in it, there are raised couches,
فيها سرر مرفوعة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 13)
ﮟﮠﮡ
88:14. and goblets (decently) set in place,
وأكواب موضوعة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 14)
ﮢﮣﮤ
88:15. and silken cushions laid in rows,
ونمارق مصفوفة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 15)
ﮥﮦﮧ
88:16. and splendid carpets spread out.
وزرابي مبثوثة
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 16)
ﮯﮰﮱﯓﯔ
88:18. And the sky, how it has been raised high?
وإلى السماء كيف رفعت
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 18)
ﯚﯛﯜﯝﯞ
88:20. And the earth, how it has been levelled out?
وإلى الأرض كيف سطحت
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 20)
ﯨﯩﯪﯫﯬ
88:23. But whoever turns away and disbelieves,
إلا من تولى وكفر
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 23)
ﯲﯳﯴﯵ
88:25. Indeed, to Us will be their return,
إن إلينا إيابهم
(al-Ghashiya, 88 : 25)
