al-Haqqa is the 69th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Undeniable Reality’ and takes its name from verses 1–3. al-Haqqa may also mean ‘The Calamity’, ‘The Resurrection’ or ‘The Inevitable’, but the ref-erence is to the Last Day. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 52 verses, 255 words, 1480 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 78th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Mulk. The sura begins by mentioning the punishments which overtook the tribes of ‘Ad, Thamud, Pharaoh and the people of Lot. The sura continues with a description of the horrors of the Day of Judgement, It states that the winners and the losers on that Day, explaining that the one given the book in his right hand will taste the joys of Paradise, and the one who receives his book in the left hand will be consigned to the burning fire of Hell. The sura concludes by emphasising that the Qur’an is God Almighty’s word, not a fabrication; it is the absolute truth and a reminder for the virtuous.
