Sura al-Infitar

The Manifest Quran 82

Introduction of Surah

al-Infitar is the 82nd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Splitting Apart or The Cleaving Asunder’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 19 verses, 140 words, 533 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 82nd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Nazi‘at. The sura begins by describing the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, describing the heavens being cleft and split apart, as one of the signs of the beginning of the Last Hour. The sura reminds people of the Recording Angels, mentioned here as ‘Keepers’ or ‘Guardians’. It further states that man’s deeds will determine his fate: the pious will go to Paradise (al-Na‘im) while the misguided will burn in Hell (al-Jahim).
