Sura al-Insan/ al-Dahr

The Manifest Quran 76

Introduction of Surah

al-Insan / al-Dahr is the 76th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Humankind / The Endless Time’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 31 verses, 240 words, 1,050 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 98th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Rahman. The first verse of the sura refers to both the human and the endless time, followed by a reminder that God Almighty has created humans from a drop of mingled fluid (i.e. zygote—a mixture of male and female gametes), then, after their development from stage to stage, Allah Almighty endows them with different cognitive faculties. The sura states that God Almighty showed humans the Way, whether they chose to be grateful or ungrateful, giving them free choice and reiterating the reward for each. The rewards of the righteous are outlined in considerable detail, including the delights of Paradise and the Fount of Salsabil. The sura, relating the qualities of the blessed servants of God Almighty, states that these are the ones who feed the poor, the orphans and the captive, omitting their own desires, and instead seek the pleasure of God Almighty. In the end, this sura encourages the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to remain steadfast in his mission and declares that the Holy Qur’an is a Reminder for those who seek the path toward God Almighty.
