Sura al-Jinn

The Manifest Quran 72

Introduction of Surah

al-Jinn is the 72nd sura of the Qur’an, which derives its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 28 verses, 285 words, 959 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 40th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-A‘raf. Its title refers to a group of jinn mentioned in verses 1–17, who came to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) while the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) was leading his Companions (may God be pleased with them) in the morning prayer. The jinn listened attentively to the Qur’anic recitation and returned to their people stating the following words: ‘We have heard a marvellous Qur’an, which guides us to the right path. So, we have believed in it and will never associate anyone with our Lord in worshipping Him.’ Following this, the sura mentions two groups among them, the righteous and the deviant. The sura moves on to warn the polytheists and explains that God Almighty is the Knower of the Unseen and does not disclose it to anyone except for His chosen Messengers (peace be upon them). Allah Almighty appoints angel guards before and behind Allah Almighty’s Mes-sengers (peace be upon them) to secure the knowledge of the Unseen, and to ensure that it is fully delivered to them. The sura also emphasises that whoever rejects the divine message of God Almighty and disobeys the Prophets (peace be upon them) will burn in the fire of Hell forever.
