Sura al-Kafirun

The Manifest Quran 109

Introduction of Surah

al-Kafirun is the 109th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Disbelievers’ or ‘The Infidels’ and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 6 verses, 28 words, 94 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 18th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Ma‘un. The sura elucidates the principle that religions should be freely chosen, held and practised, and there is no coercion upon anyone to embrace the Islamic faith. This sura provides the foundation for the concept of freedom of religion. Then the sura relates the unswerving allegiance of the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) to worship the One and True God. Regarding the virtues of the sura, Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrate on the authority of Farwa b. Nawfal from his father that the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said to Nawfal (may God be pleased with him): “Recite: Sura al-Kafirun, and sleep when it ends; it is liberation from polytheism (shirk).’ This hadith is also reported by al-Nasa’i, al-Darimi and Ibn Abi Shayba.
