Sura al-Kawthar

The Manifest Quran 108

Introduction of Surah

al-Kawthar is the 108th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Infinite Abundance of Goodness’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 3 verses, 10 words, 42 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 15th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-‘Adiyat. The first verse of the sura states that God has given ‘The Infinite Abundance of Goodness’ to His esteemed Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him). al-Kawthar—the infinite abundance of goodness—has various conno-tations: The reservoir of al-Kawthar, the stream in Paradise, the Holy Qur’an, unmeasurable goodness, the Prophethood and the Prophetic wisdom, limitless bounties and countless miracles, expansion of his religion, innumerable followers and massive community, the exalted name, status and remembrance, eminent moral conduct, uncountable virtues, unending bounties of this world and the Hereafter, Allah’s assistance and numerous victories, highly Praiseworthy Station in this world and the Hereafter, and the Divine privilege of Intercession. The remaining two verses urge the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), and through him, every believer, to pray to God Almighty and offer sacrifice. Furhter, the sura warns the man who hates the Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) will remain without offspring and legacy. Abtar, last word of the sura, refers to anything whose effects do not produce any good. Arabs used this word for a person whose sons had died, and he would have no descendants and future generations to carry his legacy on. When the Holy Prophet’s (blessings and peace be upon him) sons died, the disbe-lievers used this word for him because he was only left with daughters and All-Mighty Allah revealed this sura in their rebuttal.
