Sura al-Ma‘arij

The Manifest Quran 70

Introduction of Surah

al-Ma‘arij is the 70th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Ascending Ways or the Stairs’, and it takes its name from 3rd verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 44 verses, 213 words, 757 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 79th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Haqqa. The sura condemns the disbelievers for ridiculing the punishment of the Hereafter, affirming the truth of the Last Day, which is described as spanning ‘fifty thousand years’ and the day on which he Holy Spirit and the angels will ascend to Allah Almighty. The sura proceeds by describing the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, detailing that those who are misguided will go to Hell while the virtuous will be honoured in Paradise. Furthermore, the sura defines the righteous people as those who pray, who donate, believe and fear the punishment of the Hereafter, as well as those who guard their chastity, fulfill their pledges and uphold honesty in testimony. The sura concludes by warning the mockers of the truth and describes their horrible fate on the Day of Judgement.
