Sura al-Muddaththir

74:1. O you enwrapped (in your cloak)!

يا أيها المدثر

74:2. Arise and warn (the people).

قم فأنذر

74:3. Magnify your Lord.

وربك فكبر

74:4. Purify your garments,

وثيابك فطهر

74:5. and (continue as usual to) avoid impurities.

والرجز فاهجر

74:6. And do not do a favour, expecting a greater return.

ولا تمنن تستكثر

74:7. And remain patient (as usual) for the sake of your Lord.

ولربك فاصبر

74:8. When the Trumpet will be sounded,

فإذا نقر في الناقور

74:9. that Day shall be a day of hardship.

فذلك يومئذ يوم عسير

74:10. (It is) not at all easy for the disbelievers.

على الكافرين غير يسير

74:11. And leave Me (to deal) with the one whom I created Myself,

ذرني ومن خلقت وحيدا

74:12. and then granted him abundant wealth,

وجعلت له مالا ممدودا

74:13. and sons ever-present (by his side),

وبنين شهودا

74:14. and facilitated all matters for him, making (his life) easy.

ومهدت له تمهيدا

74:15. Still, he is eager that I should give him more.

ثم يطمع أن أزيد

74:16. No, indeed! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelations.

كلا إنه كان لآياتنا عنيدا

74:17. Soon, I will overtake him with unbearable hardship.

سأرهقه صعودا

74:18. Indeed, he reflected and plotted.

إنه فكر وقدر

74:19. So may he perish! How he plotted!

فقتل كيف قدر

74:20. Again, may he perish! How he plotted!

ثم قتل كيف قدر

74:21. Then he looked (into his scheme again).

ثم نظر

74:22. Then he frowned and twisted his face.

ثم عبس وبسر

74:23. Then he turned his back and showed arrogance,

ثم أدبر واستكبر

74:24. and said: ‘This (Qur’an) is nothing but magic transmitted (from the ancients).

فقال إن هذا إلا سحر يؤثر

74:25. This is nothing but the word of a man.’

إن هذا إلا قول البشر

74:26. I shall soon burn him in Saqar (the Fire of Hell).*

* Verses 11–26 refer to one of the staunchest opponents of the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), al-Walid b. al-Mughira, who was among the wealthiest men in Mecca and who was also among the most learned and eloquent of the Quraysh. He was a prominent leader of the Meccan opposition against Islam.

سأصليه سقر

74:27. What will make you realise what Saqar is?

وما أدراك ما سقر

74:28. It (is the Hellfire which) does not let anyone live nor leave to die.

لا تبقي ولا تذر

74:29. It burns and blackens the skin.

لواحة للبشر

74:30. There are nineteen (guards) over it.

عليها تسعة عشر

74:31. And We have appointed none but angels as the wardens of the Fire. And We have not made their number but as a test for the disbelievers, so that the People of the Book be reassured, and the believers may increase in (their) faith. And those given the Book may not doubt, and the believers as well. And those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) may say, and the disbelievers as well: ‘What does Allah intend by this example?’ In this way, Allah leaves whomever He wills to stray and guides whomever He pleases. And none knows (the number of) the forces of your Lord except Him. And this (description of Hell) is only a reminder for all humans.

وما جعلنا أصحاب النار إلا ملائكة وما جعلنا عدتهم إلا فتنة للذين كفروا ليستيقن الذين أوتوا الكتاب ويزداد الذين آمنوا إيمانا ولا يرتاب الذين أوتوا الكتاب والمؤمنون وليقول الذين في قلوبهم مرض والكافرون ماذا أراد الله بهذا مثلا كذلك يضل الله من يشاء ويهدي من يشاء وما يعلم جنود ربك إلا هو وما هي إلا ذكرى للبشر

74:32. No, indeed! By the moon!

كلا والقمر

74:33. By the night, when it retreats!

والليل إذ أدبر

74:34. By the morning, when it brightens!

والصبح إذا أسفر

74:35. Indeed! It (i.e. Hell) is one of the greatest (calamities),

إنها لإحدى الكبر

74:36. a warner to all humans,

نذيرا للبشر

74:37. for those of you who wish to take the lead or those who linger behind (trapped in evil).

لمن شاء منكم أن يتقدم أو يتأخر

74:38. Every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned,

كل نفس بما كسبت رهينة

74:39. except the People of the Right Hand.

إلا أصحاب اليمين

74:40. (They will be) in Gardens, asking one another,

في جنات يتساءلون

74:41. about the evildoers:

عن المجرمين

74:42. ‘What has led you into Saqar (i.e. the Hellfire)?’

ما سلككم في سقر

74:43. They will answer: ‘We were not among those who prayed,

قالوا لم نك من المصلين

74:44. nor did we feed the poor.

ولم نك نطعم المسكين

74:45. We used to gossip with the gossipers (in mocking the believers),

وكنا نخوض مع الخائضين

74:46. and we used to deny the Day of Judgement,

وكنا نكذب بيوم الدين

74:47. until the Certain End came upon us.’

حتى أتانا اليقين

74:48. So (now), the intercession of the intercessors will not benefit them.

فما تنفعهم شفاعة الشافعين

74:49. What is the matter with these (disbelievers) that they (still) turn away from the Reminder,

فما لهم عن التذكرة معرضين

74:50. as if they were frightened donkeys,

كأنهم حمر مستنفرة

74:51. fleeing from a lion?

فرت من قسورة

74:52. Rather, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures (for them to read).

بل يريد كل امرئ منهم أن يؤتى صحفا منشرة

74:53. No, indeed! Instead, they do not fear the Hereafter.

كلا بل لا يخافون الآخرة

74:54. No, indeed! This (Qur’an) is a Reminder.

كلا إنه تذكرة

74:55. So let anyone who wishes remember it.

فمن شاء ذكره

74:56. And they will not remember (it) unless Allah wills. He is worthy of (your) being conscious (of Him) and worthy of (granting) forgiveness.

وما يذكرون إلا أن يشاء الله هو أهل التقوى وأهل المغفرة
