al-Muddaththir is the 74th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Enwrapped One’. The sura takes its name from the 1st verse in which the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) is addressed formally as ‘O Enwrapped One’. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 56 verses, 255 words, 1010 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 4th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Muzzammil. This is one of the essential suras of the Qur’an, for it constitutes the initial command to Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) to begin preaching the revelation openly. This sura pertains to the second experience of the revelations urging the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to arise as a Messenger and warn the people of the Day of Resurrection, and the torments of Saqar (the burning of Hell), guarded by nineteen keepers, whose inhabitants will include those who did not pray nor feed the poor.
