al-Munafiqun is the 63rd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Hypocrites’ and it takes its name from 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 11 verses, 180 words, 776 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 104th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Hajj. The sura tells the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) that God is well aware that the hypocrites do not mean what they say when they acknowledge him as the Prophet of God (blessings and peace be upon him). The hypocrites do not understand that God owns all the wealth and treasure in the heavens and the earth. The sura enjoins the believers not to allow the desires and responsibilities of this world to distract them from remembering God Almighty. Furthermore, the sura instructs the believers to remain cautious of the attractive appearance and speech of the hypocrites. It further mentions that whenever hypocrites are invited to the Messenger of God (blessings and peace be upon him) so that he may seek forgiveness for them, they turn their heads arrogantly, unwilling to submit to him. Finally, the sura condemns the contemptuous behaviour of the hypocrites and commands the believers to always remain faithful and charitable.
