al-Mursalat is the 77th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Those Sent Forth’ and takes its name from the 1st verse. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 50 verses, 181 words, 816 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 33rd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Humaza. The sura begins by taking an oath by ‘Those who have been sent forth’. This has been interpreted as the winds, rain clouds, and angels. The sura then continues with a series of oaths and describes the Last Day, and goes on to issue dire warnings to those who reject the Day of Retribution. Then, this sura mentions humans’ biological creation and presents it as proof of God Almighty’s Power to bring the dead back to life for the Day of Judgement. Finally, the sura states that the virtuous will be well rewarded in Paradise and conversely details the horrors of the Last Day and describes the punishment for the disbelievers and evildoers in strong terms.
