al-Muzzammil is the 73rd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Enfolded One’, (i.e. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him), and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 20 verses, 285 words, 836 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 3rd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Qalam. This title refers to the occasion where the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) asks his blessed wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid (may God be pleased with her) to cover him up in a mantle upon the Holy Prophet’s first encounter with Angel Jibril (peace be upon him) where he (blessings and peace be upon him) received the first revelation of the Qur’an. The sura begins with the commands regarding the night vigil and measured recitation of the Qur’an. It is followed by Allah Almighty’s counsel to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to not worry about the deniers of the truth, and to depart from them courteously. Furthermore, the sura praises God Almighty as the Lord of the East and the West, and describes the raising of Prophet Musa (Moses [peace be upon him]) to Pharaoh, his denial of the truth and ultimately his severe punishment. The last portion of the sura contains Allah Almighty’s decree to ease the night prayers, making it voluntary as well as God Almighty’s command to the believers to establish the prayer, pay the Alms, lend good loans and to perform righteous deeds.
