Sura al-Qamar

The Manifest Quran 54

Introduction of Surah

al-Qamar is the 54th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Moon’. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 55 verses, 342 words, 1,423 letters, and 3 segments. It is the 37th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Tariq. Its title comes from the 1st verse of the sura, which refers to the approaching of the Hour and splitting of the moon (in two). The first two verses of the sura are mostly understood as a reference to a miracle performed by the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). The disbelievers of Mecca demanded an extraordinary miracle as proof of his prophethood. Upon their appeal, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), pointed his hand towards the moon and it appeared to separate into two halves. The disbelievers exclaimed that Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) had be-witched them, but a few days later, a few travellers arrived in Mecca and confirmed that they also witnessed the splitting of the moon. The sura proceeds with accounts of the people of Prophet Nuh (Noah [peace be upon him]), the tribes of ‘Ad and Thamud, the people of Lot and the people of Pharaoh as having ignored the warnings of God Almighty’s Messengers (peace be upon them), and were consequently punished. These are followed by an account of the Battle of Badr when the united front of the Meccan forces was defeated and forced to flee. In the end, the sura concludes by warning the disbelievers of the most catastrophic Hour whilst giving glad tidings of the Hereafter to the righteous, where they will be rewarded with Gardens, rivers and the Seat of Honour in the presence of God Almighty.
