al-Waqi‘a is the 56th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Inevitable Event’ and takes its name from the 1st verse of the sura. The chapter belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 96 verses, 378 words, 1,703 letters, and 3 segments. It is the 46th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura Ta-Ha. The sura contains descriptions of the delights of Paradise which await the just and the righteous, and the pains of Hell for the misguided and wrongdoers. God Almighty’s creative powers and blessings should be seen as His signs, so the people should believe in His Might and the Day of Resurrection, glorifying His Praise. This sura also divides the people into three categories: the foremost are those who are blessed with Allah Al-mighty’s proximity and nearness, the second category is described as the People of the Right Hand for whom Paradise awaits, and the third category comprises the People of the Left Hand for whom the Hellfire awaits. The sura contrasts the blessings of Paradise created for the first two categories of the believers, including jewelled thrones, serving eternal youths, pure wine, flowing streams, fruits and desired meats, beautiful maidens likened to immaculate pearls, a peaceful and relaxing environment and courteous and pleasant speech. It also details the punishments of Hell prepared for the People of the Left Hand, including scorching heat, black smoke, boiling water to drink and the bitter thorny bushes of al-Zaqqum to eat. In the end, the sura, referring to the Glorious Qur’an, invites people to reflect and decide which of the three categories they would like to be in.
