Sura al-Nahl

The Manifest Quran 16

Introduction of Surah

al-Nahl is the 16th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Bee.’ It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 128 verses, 2,840 words, 7,707 letters, and 16 segments. It is the 70th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Kahf (The Cave). al-Nahl derives its name from verses 68–69 which refer to God’s advice to the bees to find dwellings in the mountains, trees, and building materials. This sura extols God’s blessings on His creation and proclaims His Oneness, describing the Paradise awaiting the pious. Thereafter, it describes the painful torment which awaits those who do not believe in the signs of the Creator and deny His revelations.

Sura al-Nahl also contains injunctions prohibiting the consumption of pork, dead meat, blood, and that slaughtered by invoking a name other than God’s name. A considerable portion of the sura is focused on the rational and spiritual significance of the natural world. It explains how God has bestowed His favours on human beings through natural phenomena, including various kinds of livestock, crops, vegetation, oceans, rivers and streams, mountains, celestial bodies, travelling routes and other natural landmarks that guide the people for their journeys. This sura then mentions many blessings bestowed upon humankind so that they may be grateful to God. Water, milk, fruit juices, and honey have been singled out as some of God’s beautiful bounties. Spouses, children and different places of dwelling and protection are also mentioned as specific favours of God upon humankind.

This sura then details the denial and arrogance of the Meccan idolaters and their scheming against the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). It describes the corrupt practices of the pagan Arabs and their false accusations against the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) that he fabricated the Qur’an. The sura exemplifies the many attributes of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), presenting him as a model of excellence and a faithful devotee to His Lord. He is described as the ultimate personification of a great nation and perfectly upright on the straight path. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) rejected idolatry being a staunch believer in the Oneness of God and always grateful for His blessings. Thus, God chose him, blessed him with all goodness and righteousness in this world and the Hereafter, and made him a manifestation of the right path.

This sura also commands the believers to fulfil the covenant of God and keep their oaths and pledges to others. Finally, the sura concludes by instructing the believers to adopt graceful and generous behaviour. Believers are urged to call people towards Islam with beautiful wisdom and kind advice. In the event of any disputes or arguments with religious opponents, believers are told to remain virtuous and courteous in their manners. It educates the believers to act with restraint, patience and justice and to never go beyond reasonable limits when responding against wrongdoers.
