Sura al-Nāzi‘at

The Manifest Quran 79

Introduction of Surah

al-Nazi‘at is the 79th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Snatchers’, and takes its name from the 1st verse, referring to the angels who remove the souls of evil men. It belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 46 verses, 179 words, 753 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 81st sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Naba’. The sura begins with a series of five formal oaths and stresses the doctrine of the resurrection of the body on the Last Day. The sura also refers to the account of Prophet Musa (Moses [blessings and peace be upon him]) and the destruction of Pharaoh as a deterrent to the disbelievers. The sura concludes with a description of the Day of Resurrection, contrasting the fate of the believers with that of the disbelievers.
