Sura al-Rahman

The Manifest Quran 55

Introduction of Surah

al-Rahman is the 55th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Most Compassionate’. The title comes from the 1st verse of the sura, which refers to Allah Almighty as the Compassionate Lord, followed by the Creator, Teacher, and Revealer. The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 78 verses, 351 words, 1,336 letters, and 3 segments. It is the 97th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Ra‘d. The sura describes God Almighty’s favours and blessings to the humans and the jinn, with the recurring question: ‘Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?’ This question is repeated 31 times in the sura. Furthermore, the sura classifies people into three groups according to their deeds and rewards: ‘The disbe-lievers mentioned in verses 41–45; the virtuous believers, fearing their Lord mentioned in verses 46–61 and the average believers mentioned in verses 62–78. The sura further details the terrifying threats of Hell for the misguided describing flames of fire, seizure of the evildoers by their forelocks and feet and punishing them with scalding water and molten copper. Conversely, the sura eloquently describes the opulence of Paradise, its beauties, pleasures and delights, detailing its lush green gardens, gushing springs, flowing rivers, different fruit trees, pleasant mates and maidens with beautiful eyes, splendid pavilions, beds lined with rich brocade, silky cushions and magnificent carpets. al-Bayhaqi narrates in Shu‘ab al-Iman, on the authority of ‘Ali b. al-Husayn, from his father ‘Ali (peace be upon them) who said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) saying, ‘Everything has a bride, and the bride of the Qur’an is Sura al-Rahman.’
