Sura al-Saff

The Manifest Quran 61

Introduction of Surah

al-Saff is the 61st sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Row’ or ‘The Rank’, and it takes its name from the 4th verse. This sura is also called al-Hawariyyin (The Disciples), derived from the 14th verse, and it is also said that this is called Sura ‘Isa (Jesus [peace be upon him]). It belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 14 verses, 221 words, 900 letters, and two segments. This is the 109th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Taghabun. The sura begins by condemning hypocrisy among the believers and ensures that Allah Almighty loves those who fight in His way ‘in rank(s)’. The sura makes mention of the divine guarantee of the elevation of Islam over all religions of the world, and it emphasises Allah’s promise to bring the Light of Muhammad’s prophethood and the teaching of Islam to their complete perfection. It concludes with a quote from Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus [peace be upon him]) foretelling the coming of Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) after him and urges the people to support him in the cause of Allah.
