al-Sajda is the 32nd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Prostration’. It derives its name from verse 15, which refers to those who believe in God’s signs and prostrate in prayer when they are reminded of their Lord. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 30 verses, 330 words, 1,599 letters, and 3 segments. It is the 75th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Mu’minin. The sura begins with three Mysterious Letters of the Qur’an and refers to God’s creative power and might. The first half of the sura discusses the Qur’an as the Divine revelation and God as the Sole Creator of the Universe, Possessor of the Throne, Controller of all affairs from the heavens to the earth, and All-Capable of Resurrection. The sura provides a contrast between those who prostrate before God and those who turn away from Him, referring to the Children of Israel as an example of those who were guided so long as they followed the revelations of God. This sura calls upon the believers to reflect upon the demise of former generations and other signs of God upon the earth. The sura concludes by referring to the qualities of the believers and disbelievers, and urges the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to warn those who deny the Day of Judgement mockingly and to wait for the punishment promised by their Lord.
