al-Sharh / al-Inshirah is the 94th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Expansion of the Breast’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 8 verses, 26 words, 150 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 12th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Duha. Thematically ‘al-Duha and al-Sharh’, both speak of great favours, blessings, and bounties, bestowed upon the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him). This sura was revealed in order to relieve the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) of the difficulties that may upset him. Some commentators also suggest that this sura refers to the incident that occurred during Prophet Muhammad’s (blessings and peace be upon him) childhood, during which the Prophet’s (blessings and peace be upon him) heart was opened by the angels and filled with divine light, wisdom, and blessings. The sura seeks to console the Holy Proph-et (blessings and peace be upon him) by reminding him that he has a highly exalted status, an honoured reputation, and that the difficulty he has suffered will bring its rewards.
