Sura al-Shura

The Manifest Quran 42

Introduction of Surah

al-Shura is the 42nd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Consultation’. The sura derives its name from verse 38, which refers to the act of establishing prayer and conducting social affairs by mutual consultation. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 53 verses, 866 words, 3,588 letters, and 5 segments. It is the 62nd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura Fussilat. The sura begins with five Mysterious Letters of the Qur’an, spread over two verses, and emphasises God’s attributes of Might, Omnipotence, Wisdom, Mercy and Grace. It also refers to God being the Creator, Provider and Protector of all worlds. It asserts that the teachings of Islam revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) are the same as those revealed to Prophet Adam, Prophet Nuh (Noah), Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Prophet Musa (Moses) and Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus [peace be upon them]). The sura mentions that the Qur’an has been revealed with the truth and the balance of justice, referring to the contrast between the harvest of this world and the harvest of the Hereafter to differentiate between the fates of believers and non-believers. This sura also refutes the polytheistic accusation of the fabrication of the Holy Qur’an. The sura further mentions the abundance of God’s provision upon His servants and different signs of His creations, including the oceans, winds and sailing ships. Then the sura presents the qualities of the devout and the evil and warns the un-grateful disbelievers. The sura concludes by mentioning different forms of divine communication and the attributes of the Qur’an as the light and the guidance towards the path of God Almighty.
