Introduction of Surah
al-Taghabun is the 64th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Mutual Loss and Gain’ and it takes its name from the 9th verse. It belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 18 verses, 241 words, 1,070 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 108th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Tahrim. Verse 9 refers to the Day of Resurrection as ‘The Day of Mutual Loss and Gain’, when people’s expectations will turn upside down, and humans cannot repay the debt they owe to God Almighty. That Day, people will be divided into winners and losers. The sura begins by describing God Almighty’s kingdom of the heavens and the earth and creating and shaping the people in their mothers’ wombs. The sura reassures believers that they will enter Paradise, while the disbelievers who deny God’s signs will enter Hell. The sura warns the believers to beware of their enemies, even among their wives and children and further that their wealth as well as their children are just a trial for the believers. The sura concludes by urging the believers to be mindful of God Almighty, to listen and obey Him, to spend from their wealth in charity and save their souls from selfishness.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the All-Merciful
ﭑﭒﭓﭔﭕﭖﭗﭘﭙﭚﭛﭜﭝﭞﭟﭠﭡﭢﭣﭤ
64:1. Whatever is in the heavens glorifies Allah, and whatever is on the earth. To Him belongs (all) sovereignty, and to Him belongs (all) praise. And He is All-Capable of everything.
يسبح لله ما في السماوات وما في الأرض له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير
(al-Taghabun, 64 : 1)
ﮛﮜﮝﮞﮟﮠﮡﮢﮣﮤﮥﮦﮧﮨﮩﮪﮫﮬﮭ
64:6. That was because their messengers used to bring them clear proofs, but they said: ‘Shall a human being guide us?’ So they disbelieved and turned away. And Allah is not in need (of their faith). And Allah is Self-Sufficient, All-Praised.
* This meaning of the word bashar (human being) is according to what the eminent exegetes have described. See: Tafsir al-Tabari, al-Kashshaf, al-Nasafi, al-Baghawi, al-Khazin, al-Jumal, al-Mazhari and Fath al-Qadir, etc.
ذلك بأنه كانت تأتيهم رسلهم بالبينات فقالوا أبشر يهدوننا فكفروا وتولوا واستغنى الله والله غني حميد
(al-Taghabun, 64 : 6)
ﮮﮯﮰﮱﯓﯔﯕﯖﯗﯘﯙﯚﯛﯜﯝﯞﯟﯠﯡﯢﯣ
64:7. The disbelievers claim that they will not be resurrected. Say: ‘Yes indeed, by my Lord! You will surely be resurrected. Then, you will surely be informed of what you did. And that is easy for Allah.’
زعم الذين كفروا أن لن يبعثوا قل بلى وربي لتبعثن ثم لتنبؤن بما عملتم وذلك على الله يسير
(al-Taghabun, 64 : 7)
ﯰﯱﯲﯳﯴﯵﯶﯷﯸﯹﯺﯻﯼﯽﯾﯿﰀﰁﰂﰃﰄﰅﰆﰇﰈﰉﰊﰋﰌﰍﰎ
64:9. The Day when He will gather you (all), for the Day of (the Great) Gathering, that will be the Day of Mutual Loss and Gain. And whoever believes in Allah and acts righteously, He will absolve him of his misdeeds and admit him into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, to abide there forever. That is the ultimate success.
يوم يجمعكم ليوم الجمع ذلك يوم التغابن ومن يؤمن بالله ويعمل صالحا يكفر عنه سيئاته ويدخله جنات تجري من تحتها الأنهار خالدين فيها أبدا ذلك الفوز العظيم
(al-Taghabun, 64 : 9)
ﭱﭲﭳﭴﭵﭶﭷﭸﭹﭺﭻﭼﭽ
64:12. Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him). But if you turn away, (then know that) Our Messenger’s (blessings and peace be upon him) responsibility is only the clear proclamation (of Our message).
وأطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول فإن توليتم فإنما على رسولنا البلاغ المبين
(al-Taghabun, 64 : 12)
ﮉﮊﮋﮌﮍﮎﮏﮐﮑﮒﮓﮔﮕﮖﮗﮘﮙﮚﮛﮜ
64:14. O believers! You (can) have some enemies, even among your spouses and children. So beware of them! Yet if you pardon, overlook and forgive (their faults), then Allah is indeed Most-Forgiving, All-Merciful.
يا أيها الذين آمنوا إن من أزواجكم وأولادكم عدوا لكم فاحذروهم وإن تعفوا وتصفحوا وتغفروا فإن الله غفور رحيم
