al-Takathur is the 102nd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Competition of Wealth Accumulation’, or ‘The Multiplication’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 8 verses, 28 words, 120 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 16th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Kawthar. al-Takathur has also been rendered as ‘The Rivalry’ or ‘The Worldly Gain’. Ac-cording to one interpretation, this is directed at clans boasting about their numbers, one even enumerating the dead in its calculations. The sura speaks of the delusion of accumulating worldly goods and promises, and those who persist in such behaviour, when questioned about their worldly pleasures, will certainly know and see the Hellfire.
