Sura al-Takwir

The Manifest Quran 81

Introduction of Surah

al-Takwir is the 81st sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Rolling Up’, and takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 29 verses, 140 words, 533 letters, and 1 segment. It is the 7th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Masad. The sura begins with a description of the Day of Resurrection with the words ‘When the sun is rolled up and darkened’. Further-more, the sura describes other apocalyptic events, stating that every soul will meet the consequences of its deeds. The sura also refers to the pre-Islamic custom of burying infant girls alive, who will ask why they were slain. The sura concludes with a reference to the occasion when the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) encountered the Angel Jibril (peace be upon him) in his glory, standing on the horizon, for the first time.
