al-Talaq is the 65th sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Divorce’ and it takes its name from the 1st verse. The sura belongs to the Medinan period and comprises 12 verses, 240 words, 1,060 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 99th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Insan. This sura deals with the subject of divorce and supplements the related content in Sura al-Baqara. The sura also provides details regarding the ‘waiting period’ in the case of divorce, especially for women who are not menstruating. The sura also instructs the divorcing husband to provide for the wife, especially if she is pregnant or suckling. The sura further at-tributes good deeds with an entry to Paradise and evil deeds to a parallel end in Hell.
