al-Tur is the 52nd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘The Mountain’. It derives its title from the 1st verse, which reads ‘By the Mount Sinai’, a reference to the mountain where Prophet Musa (Moses [peace be upon him]) conversed with God Almighty. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 49 verses, 312 words, 1,500 letters, and 2 segments. It is the 76th sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Sajda. The sura begins with a series of oaths, affirming the promise of God Almighty regarding the Day of Judgement. The sura proceeds to describe the horrors of the Fires of Hell and the pleasures of Paradise. It also replies to accusations of disbelievers, and further challenges them to produce the like of the Qur’an. The sura emphatically refutes the disbelievers who accuse the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) of being a fortune-teller, a madman, a poet, or a fabricator, and reassures him that everlasting destruction awaits these rebellious liars. The sura ends with God’s consoling statement for His Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to remain patient, for he is always under God’s Care, Protection and Loving eyes. In the end, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) is urged to glorify His praise when he rises, during the night hours and at the fading of the stars.
