Sura al-Zukhruf

The Manifest Quran 43

Introduction of Surah

al-Zukhruf is the 43rd sura of the Qur’an, which means ‘Gold Ornaments’, and derives its name from verse 35. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and comprises 89 verses, 833 words, 3,400 letters, and 7 seg-ments. It is the 63rd sura in chronological order, revealed after Sura al-Shura. The sura begins with two Mysterious Letters of the Qur’an and surveys details of God’s creation and its different signs in the heavens and the earth. The chapter states that the Meccan polytheists follow their misguided forefathers, falsely claiming the angels as God Almighty’s daughters. The sura describes the fate of previous communities who rejected the prophets sent to them and mentions the accounts of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Prophet Musa (Moses) and Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus [peace be upon them]) in this regard. The sura further relates the rewards of the righteous and the torment of the evil, warning the worshippers of the false gods in the words of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him): ‘If the Most Compassionate Lord had off-springs I would have been the first worshipper of those, but the Lord of the Throne is far above what they claim’. The sura concludes with advice to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) to bear patiently with the deniers and respond to them with the message of peace.
