وَإِذَا سَمِعُواْ

83. When they listen to what has been revealed to the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they recognise. They say: ‘Our Lord! We believe, so write us down among the witnesses.’

84. Why should we not believe in Allah and the truth that has come to us? And we long for our Lord to include us in the company of the righteous people.

85. So Allah rewarded them for what they said, with Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, to abide in them forever. That is the reward of the virtuously excellent.

86. But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations—such shall be the inhabitants of the Hellfire.

87. O believers! Do not prohibit the good things Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors.

88. Eat from the lawful and pure things Allah has provided you and be conscious of Allah in Whom you (all) believe.

89. Allah does not call you to account for what is frivolous in your oaths, but He will hold you accountable for your deliberate oaths. The atonement for it (i.e. the breaking of an oath) is feeding ten poor persons the average food you would normally serve to your own family, or their clothing, or freeing a slave. And whosoever does not find (the means) shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for your oaths when you have sworn (them). But guard your oaths. Thus, Allah makes clear to you His revelations so that you may be grateful.

90. O believers! Indeed (all) intoxicants and (every kind of) gambling and idolatrous stones for sacrificing animals and divining (with) arrows are the filth of Satan’s act. Therefore, avoid them so that you may be successful.

91. Satan desires only to cause enmity and hatred among you through intoxication and gambling and to bar you from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. Will you, then, refrain?

92. And obey Allah and obey the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), and always be on your guard. But if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger’s duty is only the clear proclamation (of the divine message).

93. There is no blame upon those who believe (in Allah) and perform righteous deeds regarding what they have eaten (before the prohibition), as long as they guard themselves (against evil), believe and perform righteous deeds, and then (continue to) be God-conscious and believe, and then remain (ever) conscious (of the commands of Allah) and excel—and Allah loves those who are virtuously excellent.

94. O believers! Allah will surely test you with something of the game which your hands and your spears will reach so that Allah may distinguish who fears Him privately. Then, whoever transgresses after that shall have a painful punishment.

95. O believers! Do not kill any game while you are in pilgrim sanctity. And whosoever of you kills it intentionally, the compensation (for it) is (to sacrifice) cattle equivalent to the one he has killed, as judged by two just men among you, as an offering brought to the Ka‘ba. Alternatively, (its compensation is) the atonement by feeding the needy or fasting of its equivalent so that he may taste the consequence of his violation. Allah has forgiven what has already passed. But whosoever repeats (a similar act), Allah will take vengeance on him. And Allah is All-Mighty, the All-Capable of Vengeance.

96. You are permitted to hunt and eat seafood as a provision for you and the travellers. But you have been forbidden the game of the land so long as you remain in pilgrim sanctity. And be God-conscious, to Whom you shall be gathered.

97. Allah has made the Ka‘ba, the Sacred House, a sanctuary of well-being for people, and (also) the sacred month, the offering (of the sacrificial animals) and garlands. All that (is ordained) so you may know that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and that Allah is All-Knowing of everything.

98. Know that Allah is Severe in retribution, and Allah is Most-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

99. The Messenger’s responsibility is only to communicate, and Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.

100. Say: ‘The good and the evil are not equal, though the abundance of evil may impress you. Be conscious of Allah, O possessors of intellect, that you may succeed.’

101. O believers! Do not ask regarding things (the Qur’an is silent about) which, if they are made clear to you, may trouble you. And if you ask about them while the Qur’an is being revealed, they shall be disclosed to you (and you will be left with no discretion). Allah has (so far) excused these matters. And Allah is Most-Forgiving, All-Forbearing.

102. Indeed, some people before you asked such questions, then became disbelievers on account of them.

103. Allah has not prescribed any such thing as Bahira, Sa’iba, Wasila and Ham.* But the disbelievers fabricate lies against Allah, and most of them do not understand.

* These four terms refer to particular kinds of camels that the pagan Arabs used to dedicate to different idols and consider them sacred. Such camels could not be ridden or milked or made to carry any burden, but they had to be allowed to wander and graze freely. These camels would often be marked by slit ears to make the people aware of their sacred status. The Qur’an has rejected and condemned this idolatrous practice of the pre-Islamic Arabs.

104. And when it is said to them: ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and (come) to the Messenger,’ they say: ‘What we have found our forefathers practising is good enough for us.’ What! Even if their forefathers did not know anything and were not guided?

105. O believers! Take care of your own souls. The one who deviates from the right path cannot harm you if you are rightly guided. To Allah shall be your return all together. Then He shall inform you regarding what you used to do.

106. O believers! When death approaches any of you while making a will, the witness between you shall be two just persons among you; otherwise, two from among others (i.e. non-muslims, if Muslim witnesses are not available). It is (needed) if you are travelling in the land and the calamity of death befalls you. You shall detain the two of them after prayer, and if you doubt (their testimony), then they shall testify under oath (saying): ‘By Allah! We will never sell it for any price, even if he were a close relative, nor will we conceal the testimony of Allah, for then we would surely be among the sinful.’

107. If it is found that both of them were guilty of sin (i.e. perjury), then let two others stand in their place from those most entitled as claimants (among the deceased’s closest heirs affected by the bequest). Then they should swear by Allah (saying:) ‘Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed. Otherwise, we would indeed be among the wrongdoers.’

108. It is more likely that they (i.e. the witnesses) will give the testimony in its accurate form or fear that their oaths might be refuted by other oaths afterwards. Be conscious of Allah and listen. Allah does not guide the transgressing people.

109. The Day when Allah will gather the messengers and say: ‘What response did you receive?’ They will say: ‘We have no knowledge (compared to You). Indeed, You are the Great Knower of all unseen things.’

110. When Allah will say: ‘O ‘Isa, son of Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary), remember My blessing upon you, and upon your mother when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit so that you would speak to the people in the cradle and adulthood, and when I taught you the Scripture, Wisdom, the Torah and the Injil (the Gospel), and when you would create from clay the shape of a bird by My permission, and you would breathe into it and it would become a (flying) bird by My permission, and you would heal the blind and the leper by My permission and you would bring the dead back to life by My permission. And when I restrained the Children of Israel from (killing) you while you brought them clear proofs, but the disbelievers among them said: ‘This is nothing but clear magic.’

111. And when I inspired the disciples to believe in Me and My messenger (‘Isa [Jesus]), they said: ‘We believe and bear witness that we submit to God entirely (i.e. that we are Muslims).’

112. When the disciples said: ‘O ‘Isa, son of Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary)! Can your Lord send down to us a feast (i.e. a table spread with food) from heaven?’ ‘Isa (Jesus) said: ‘Be conscious of Allah if you are (true) believers.’

113. They said: ‘We desire to eat from it so that our hearts will be at peace, and we shall know that you have told us the truth, and we shall be among the witnesses to it.’

114. ‘Isa, the son of Maryam (Jesus, the son of Mary) said: ‘O Allah, our Lord! Send down to us a feast (i.e. a table spread with food) from heaven to be a festival for us, for the first of us and the last of us, and as a sign from Yourself. And provide for us, for You are the best of providers.’

115. Allah said: ‘I am sending it down to you. But whosoever among you disbelieves after this, I shall subject him to a punishment I have never inflicted on any other in all the worlds.’

116. And when Allah will say: ‘O ‘Isa, son of Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary)! Did you say to the people: ‘Take me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?’’ He will say: ‘Glory be to You! It does not befit me that I should say what I have no right to (say). Had I said such a thing, You would indeed have known it. You know what is (hidden) within me, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, You are the Great Knower of all unseen things.

117. I did not tell them (anything) except what You had commanded me (to say): ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ And I was witness over them as long as I remained among them. But since You took me (to Yourself), You were the Watcher over them. And You are Witness over everything.

118. If You punish them, they are indeed Your servants. But if You forgive them, You are indeed the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.’

119. Allah will say: ‘This is the Day when truthfulness shall benefit the truthful. For them shall be Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, to abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the ultimate success.

120. To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and whatsoever is in them, and He is All-Capable of everything.

1. All praise belongs to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and made (manifold) darknesses and the light. Yet the disbelievers equate (others) to their Lord.

2. He is the One Who created you from clay and then determined a term (of your life). (The knowledge of) the specified time (for your death) is with Him, yet you continue to doubt.

3. And He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth; He knows your secret (thoughts) and your open (words and acts). And He knows what you earn.

4. Whenever a sign came to them from among the signs of their Lord, they used to turn away from it.

5. They indeed denied the truth when it came to them, but soon, the news will come to them regarding what they have been mocking.

6. Have they not realised how many generations We have destroyed before them? We had established them in the land in a way that We have never established you. And We sent (from the sky) abundant rains upon them and made rivers flow beneath them. Then, We destroyed them for their sins and brought about another generation after them.

7. (Esteemed Prophet!) Even if We had revealed to you a Book written on parchment, and they had touched it with their own hands, the disbelievers would (still) have said: ‘This is nothing but clear magic.’

8. And they would say: ‘Why has an angel not been (physically) sent down to (support) him?’ But had We sent down an angel, the matter would have certainly been decreed (at once), and they would have never been given respite.

9. And if We had sent an angel himself (as a messenger), We would have surely sent him as a man, and (even in that case) We would have put them in the same doubt which they already are in (i.e. being confused over his physical appearance, they would say: ‘He is just a man like us.’)

10. (Other) messengers had already been mocked before you (Esteemed Prophet). Then, those who mocked them were besieged by what they used to ridicule.

11. Say: ‘Travel through the land, then see how the end of the deniers was.’

12. Say: ‘To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth?’ Say: ‘To Allah.’ He has prescribed mercy upon Himself (as a gracious obligation). He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt. Those who have ruined themselves will never believe.

13. And to Him belongs whatever rests in the night and the day. And He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

14. Say: ‘Shall I take (someone) as guardian other than Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who feeds and is not fed,’ Say: ‘I have been commanded to be the first who submits himself (to Allah). And you should not be among the polytheists.’

15. Say: ‘Indeed, I fear—if I were to disobey my Lord—the punishment of a tremendous Day.’

16. Whoever is spared (from the punishment) on that Day, He has surely shown His Mercy to him, and that is the manifest success.

17. And if Allah afflicts you with some suffering, no one can remove it except Him, and if He bestows some good upon you, then He is All-Capable of everything.

18. And He is Dominant over His servants, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.

19. Say: ‘What thing is greatest as a witness?’ Say: ‘Allah! (He is) witness between me and you. And this Qur’an has been revealed to me that I may warn you through it, and whomever it may reach. Do you truly testify that there are other gods besides Allah?’ Say: ‘I do not testify.’ Say: ‘He is only One God, and I indeed disown whatever you associate (with Him).’

20. Those to whom We have given the Book recognise him (i.e. the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) just as they recognise their sons. Those who have ruined their souls will never believe.

21. Who is more unjust than the one who fabricates a lie against Allah or rejects His revelations? Indeed, the unjust will not prosper.

22. On the Day We assemble them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners (to Allah): ‘Where are your partners whom you have been asserting?’

23. Then their argument would be nothing but to say: ‘By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists.’

24. See how they lie against themselves; what they used to fabricate has deserted them!

25. Among them are those who (appear to) listen to you, but We have placed covers over their hearts, lest they should understand it, and (there is) deafness in their ears. Even if they were to see every sign, they would (still) not believe in it. When these disbelievers come to you to dispute with you, they say: ‘This (Qur’an) is nothing but the fictions of the ancients.’

26. And they prevent (others) from (following) him and (also) keep themselves away from him. They destroy none but themselves, though they fail to realise this.

27. Only if you could see when they will be detained before the Fire! They will say: ‘Oh! If only we were sent back (to the world), we would not reject our Lord’s communications, and we would be among the believers!’

28. Instead, what they used to hide before has become evident to them. Even if they were sent back, they would (again) return to what they were forbidden. And most surely, they are liars.

29. They say: ‘There is nothing beyond our life of this world, and we shall not be resurrected (after death).’

30. If (only) you could see when they will be made to stand before their Lord! He will say: ‘Is this not the truth?’ They will say: ‘Yes, by our Lord.’ He will say: ‘So taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve.’

31. Indeed, lost are those who deny the meeting with Allah. When the Hour takes them suddenly, they will say: ‘Alas for us, for we did not pay regard to this (Hour).’ And they will bear their burdens upon their backs. Indeed, terrible is what they bear!

32. The life of this world is nothing but game and amusement. And the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are God-conscious. Do you not understand?

33. (Esteemed Prophet!) We surely know that what they say grieves you. Yet, they are not denying you (only)—but these are the signs of Allah that the wrongdoers deny.

34. Surely messengers were rejected before you, but they endured patiently under the denial and persecution till Our help came to them. No one can change the Words of Allah, and there have certainly come to you some accounts of the messengers.

35. And if their turning away is distressing to you, then find, if you can, a tunnel (to go down) into the earth or a ladder (to climb up) into heaven and bring them some (exceptional) sign (even then they will not believe). Had Allah willed, He would certainly have gathered them all upon guidance. So (because of your overwhelming concern and compassion for them), do not be unaware (of their ill fortune).

36. Only those who listen (sincerely) will respond (to you). As for the dead, Allah will resurrect them, and to Him, they shall be returned.

37. They say: ‘Why has a (visible) sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say: ‘Allah is indeed capable of sending down a sign, but most of them do not know (the secrets behind His actions).’

38. There is no walking (or crawling) creature on the earth, nor a bird that flies with its wings, but they are species like yourselves (in several traits). We have not omitted anything in the Book. Then, they will be gathered to their Lord (in the end).

39. And those who reject Our revelations are deaf and dumb (and are trapped) in (manifold) darkness. And Allah leaves whomever He wills to stray and guides whomever He pleases to the straight path.

40. Say (to them): ‘What do you think: If Allah’s punishment comes upon you, or the Hour overtakes you, will you supplicate somebody other than Allah, if you are truthful?’

41. Instead, it is only Him you will supplicate, and if He wills, He will remove (the affliction) that had caused you to supplicate Him, and you will forget whatever partners you ascribe to Him.

42. We had indeed sent (messengers) to (different) nations before you, then We afflicted them with hardships and sufferings so that they might humble themselves (to Us).

43. So why did they not humble themselves when our punishment overtook them? Instead, their hearts had hardened, and Satan made what they used to do alluring to them.

44. So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened the gates of all (good) things for them (to flourish abundantly), until, when they rejoiced in what they were given, We seized them suddenly (with terrible punishment), and they were struck with utter despair.

45. Thus, the (last) remnants of those people who were unjust were cut off. And all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

46. Say: ‘What do you think: If Allah takes away your hearing and your sight and seals your hearts, which god besides Allah can bring it (back) to you?’ Look how We explain Our revelations in various ways! Yet they still turn away.

47. Say: ‘What do you think: If Allah’s punishment comes to you suddenly or openly, would anyone be destroyed except the wrongdoing people?’

48. We do not send the messengers except as bearers of glad tidings and as warners. As for those who become believers and righteous, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.

49. But as for those who reject Our Signs, the punishment shall afflict them because of the disobedience they had been committing.

50. Say (to the disbelievers): ‘I do not say to you that I possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the Unseen myself, nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.’ Say: ‘Can the blind and the seeing be equal? Will you not then reflect?’

51. And warn with this (Qur’an) those fearful of being gathered towards their Lord—when they shall have no guardian except Him nor any intercessor; perhaps they may be God-conscious.

52. Do not drive away those (poor believers) who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking nothing but His countenance (i.e. His nearness and pleasure). Neither are you accountable for them whatsoever, nor are they accountable for you in any way, so that you may turn them away and become among those who deprive others of their rights (and such is not befitting for your compassionate being).

53. Thus, We have made some of them a test for others so they might say: ‘Are these (poor believers) the ones whom Allah has favoured from among us?’ Does not Allah know best who are grateful?

54. When those who believe in Our revelations come to you, say: ‘Peace be upon you!’ Your Lord (out of His Grace) has prescribed mercy upon Himself. Whoever among you commits evil out of ignorance, then repents after that, and reforms (himself)—He is indeed Most-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

55. In this way, We expound the signs so that the way of the evildoers is exposed.

56. Say: ‘I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah.’ Say: ‘I do not follow your desires, for then I would have gone astray, and I would not have been among the rightly guided.’

57. Say: ‘Indeed I stand upon a clear proof from my Lord, though you have denied it. (The punishment) that you seek to hasten is not up to me. The judgement belongs only to Allah. He tells the truth, and He is the Best of judges.’

58. Say: ‘If what you seek to hasten were within my power, the matter would already have been decided between you and me, and Allah knows best the wrongdoers.’

59. With Him are the keys of the Unseen. No one knows them (on his own) except Him. And He knows whatever is in the land and the sea. And no leaf falls, but He knows it, nor is there a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything moist or dry, but it is (written) in a manifest Book.

60. He is the One Who takes your souls at night (in sleep) and knows whatever you earn by day. Then He raises you up (again) in the daytime until the fixed term (of life) is completed. Then to Him shall be your return, and He will inform you of what you have been doing.

61. And He is All-Dominant over His servants. And He sends upon you recording angels (to watch over you), until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take him away, and they never neglect (their duty).

62. Then they are returned to Allah, their true Lord. Beware! The judgement belongs to Him. And He is the swiftest of reckoners.

63. Say: ‘Who saves you from the darkness of land and sea, (when) you supplicate Him humbly and secretly, (saying:) ‘If He delivers us from this (adversity), we will surely be among the grateful?’’

64. Say: ‘Only Allah delivers you from them, and every (other) distress, yet you ascribe partners to Him.’

65. Say: ‘He (alone) has the power to send upon you a punishment from above you or beneath your feet, or to confuse you by splitting you into (hostile) sects and make you taste the violence of one against the other.’ See how We explain (Our) revelations in various ways so perhaps they may understand.

66. Your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say: ‘I am not a guardian over you.’

67. For every (destined) news, there is a fixed time to transpire, and you shall soon come to know.

68. When you see those engaged in false discussions about Our revelations, avoid them until they engage in a different discourse. But if Satan causes you to forget, then, after remembering, do not sit in the company of the wrongdoing people.

69. Those who are God-conscious are in no way accountable for them (i.e. the wrongdoers), but this is merely a reminder so that they may guard themselves (against evil).

70. Leave those who take their religion for play and amusement, and whom the life of this world has deceived. But keep reminding (them) by this (Qur’an), so that no soul should be ruined for what it has earned. The (disbelieving) soul shall have no guardian or intercessor besides Allah; even if it were to offer every possible ransom, none would be accepted from it. They are the ones who will be ruined because of what they have earned. There shall be a drink of boiling liquid and a painful punishment for what they used to disbelieve in.

71. Say: ‘Should we worship something besides Allah that can neither benefit us nor harm us and (should we) turn back on our heels (to disbelief) after Allah has guided us? (If we do so, we will be) like someone whom the devils have seduced in the wilderness on the earth, though he has companions who call him to guidance (saying): ‘Come to us?’ Say(O Prophet): ‘Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the (only) true guidance. And We have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all worlds,

72. and to establish the prayer and to be conscious of Him. And He is the One to Whom you shall be gathered.’

73. He is the One Who created the heavens and the earth with truthful purpose. On the Day when He says (to something): ‘Be!’ There it will be. His Word is the truth. And to Him belongs all sovereignty on the Day when the Trumpet will be blown (by Israfil). The Knower of the Unseen and the seen, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.

74. When Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his (fostering) father Azar*: ‘Do you take idols for gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in obvious error.’

* Azar was, in fact, Abraham’s paternal uncle and caretaker, not his birth father. The name of his birth father was Tarekh.

75. Thus did We show Ibrahim (Abraham) the kingdoms of the heavens and the earth, that he might be among the possessors of firm certitude.

76. So when the night grew dark upon him, he saw a star. He said: ‘This is my Lord!’ But when it set, he said: ‘I do not love things that set.’

77. When he saw the moon rising, he said: ‘This is my Lord!’ But when it set, he said: ‘Had my Lord not guided me, I would surely have been among the misguided people.’

78. When he saw the sun rising, he said: ‘This must be my Lord! It is bigger (than the other two).’ But when it set, he said: ‘O my people! Indeed, I disown all that you ascribe as (His) partners.

79. I have turned my face towards the One Who has originated the heavens and the earth, being an upright believer, and I am not among the polytheists.’

80. His people argued with him. He said: ‘Do you argue with me concerning Allah while He has guided me? I do not fear whatever (idols) you ascribe to Him (as His) partners, except anything that my Lord may wish. My Lord comprehends all things in (His) knowledge. Will you then not remember?

81. How should I fear the partners you ascribe when you do not fear ascribing partners to Allah, for which He has not sent down any authority to you? So which of the two parties has a greater right to safety if (only) you know?’

82. Those who believe and do not mix up their belief with wrongdoing, it is they who shall have safety (in the Hereafter), and they are the (rightly) guided.

83. That was Our argument We gave to Ibrahim (Abraham) against his people. We raise in degrees whomsoever We please. Indeed, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

84. And We bestowed upon him Ishaq (Isaac) and Ya‘qub (Jacob), and blessed all (of them) with guidance. And We had guided Nuh (Noah) before, and from his offspring, Dawud (David), Sulayman (Solomon), Ayyub (Job), Yusuf (Joseph), Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron). Thus, do We reward the virtuously excellent.

85. And (We guided) Zakariyya (Zachariah), Yahya (John), ‘Isa (Jesus) and Ilyas (Elias). All (of them) were among the righteous.

86. And (We also guided) Isma‘il (Ishmael), al-Yasa‘ (Elisha), Yunus (Jonah) and Lut (Lot). And We graced all (of them) over the nations,

87. and from among their forefathers, their offspring and their brethren. We chose them and guided them to a straight path.

88. That is Allah’s guidance, with which He guides whomsoever He pleases among His servants. And if they were to ascribe partners (to Allah), whatever (good) they were doing would have been removed from them.

89. They are the ones whom We gave the Book, the (sound) judgement, and prophethood. So if these (pagans) disbelieve in them, We have already entrusted them to a people who will never deny them.

90. Those were the people whom Allah had guided. So, follow their (path of) guidance. Say: ‘I do not ask you any reward for it. It is nothing but a reminder for all the nations.’

91. They did not pay due regard to the Reverence of Allah when (denying prophethood,) they said: ‘Allah did not reveal anything to any human.’ Say: ‘Who revealed the Book that Musa (Moses) brought as a light and a guidance for the people, which you make into (separate) parchments that you display, while you conceal much (of it)? And you were taught (through that) what you had not known before, neither you nor your fathers.’ Say: ‘Allah.’ Then, leave them alone to play around in their impious discourse.

92. Blessed is this Book (which) We have sent down, confirming what was revealed before it, so that you may warn (the people of) the Mother of Cities (i.e. Mecca) and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it and are watchful of their prayers.

93. Who could be more unjust than someone who fabricates a lie against Allah or says: ‘It has been revealed to me,’ although nothing was revealed to him, and he who says: ‘I will reveal something equal to what Allah has revealed?’ If only you could see when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch out their hands (to them saying): ‘Give up your souls! Today, you shall be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation for you have been speaking untruth against Allah, and for you have been arrogant towards His revelations.’

94. (Then Allah will say:) ‘Now you have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time, and you have left behind whatever We had bestowed upon you. And We do not see your intercessors with you, whom you claimed that they were (Our) partners in your matters. Surely, all links between you have been cut (today). And what you have been claiming has abandoned you.

95. Indeed, Allah is the Splitter of the grain and the fruit stone. He brings out the living from the dead, and He brings the dead out from the living. That is Allah! So, how are you misled?

96. (He is) the Splitter of the dawn. He has made the night for rest, the sun, and the moon (to travel) with calculation. That is the finely-measured design of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.

97. And He is the One Who made the stars for you so you can navigate through them in the darkness of land and sea. Indeed, We have distinguished the signs for the people having (astronomical) knowledge.

98. He is the One Who produced you from one living soul (i.e. a single cell). Then (assigned you) a place to stay (in life) and a place (to be laid) for rest. Indeed, We have explained the signs to people who understand deeply.

99. He is the One Who sends down water from the clouds. Then, with it, We bring out the buds of all plants. Thereby, We bring out the vegetation, from which We produce the grain in closely packed rows. And from the palm trees (We bring out) clusters of dates hanging low, and gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranate, (which from many aspects look) similar and dissimilar. Look upon its fruit as it grows and ripens. Indeed, there are signs for the people who believe in all these things.

100. They make the jinn partners of Allah, though He has created them, and they falsely attribute sons and daughters to Him without any knowledge. Glory be to Him! And Exalted is He above what they ascribe.

101. The Originator of the heavens and the earth! How could He have a child when He has no spouse? Whereas He created all things, and He is All-Knowing of everything.

102. That is Allah, your Lord; there is no god except Him, the Creator of everything. So worship Him, and He is the Guardian over everything.

103. Visions cannot comprehend Him, but He comprehends all visions. And He is the All-Subtle, the All-Aware.

104. Indeed, clear insights have come to you from your Lord. If anyone sees (them) clearly, it will be to his benefit. And whoever remains blind it will be to his loss. And I am not a watcher over you.

105. Thus, We diversify the styles of Our Communications so they may exclaim: ‘You have studied (from somewhere),’ and We make this (Qur’an) clear to the people who possess knowledge.

106. Follow what has been revealed to you by your Lord. There is no god except Him—and turn away from the polytheists.

107. If Allah had willed, they would not have ascribed partners (to Him). And We have not made you a watcher over them, nor are you an advocate for them.

108. Do not abuse whatever (idols) they worship besides Allah, lest they vindictively insult Allah out of ignorance. That is how We have made the conduct of every community seem alluring to them. Then to their Lord shall be their return, and He will inform them of what they had been doing.

109. And they swear by Allah their most solemn oaths that if a sign came to them, they would most certainly believe in it. Say: ‘The signs are only with Allah.’ And, (O Muslims,) what will make you realise that even if those (signs) were to come, they would (still) not believe.

110. We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away from (accepting the truth) as they did not believe in it the first time. And We will leave them wandering, confused in their rebellion.
