اَلَّذِیۡنَ عٰہَدۡتَّ مِنۡہُمۡ ثُمَّ یَنۡقُضُوۡنَ عَہۡدَہُمۡ فِیۡ کُلِّ مَرَّۃٍ وَّ ہُمۡ لَا یَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۵۶﴾
56. (they are) those among them (i.e. the tribes of al-Nadir and Qurayza) with whom you entered into treaties (for mutual peace and state security), but they violated their treaties every time,* and who do not guard themselves (against evil).
* The tribes of al-Nadir and Qurayza had violated their peace treaties by supporting the Meccan armies during their invasions of Medina and by providing them arms, ammunition and strategic information. It was an act of high treason against the state—as agreed upon in the constitution, mutually signed by all Muslims and Jewish tribes in the form of the ‘Pact of Medina’.
