* It also means: ‘I swear by the places where different portions of the Qur’an are descending.’ This translation is based on the exposition given by ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Abbas, ‘Ikrima, Mujahid, ‘Abd Allah b. Jubayr, al-Suddi, al-Farra’, al-Zujaj and others. The context also denotes the same meaning. In the preceding sura, Sura al-Najm, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) was given the title: ‘al-Najm’ (the Star), and in this verse, different Qur’anic chapters (suras) are mentioned as ‘al-nujum’ (stars).
