2. These are the Verses of the Manifest Book.

تلك آيات الكتاب المبين

3. (Esteemed Prophet!) You will perhaps consume yourself with grief that they are not becoming believers.

لعلك باخع نفسك ألا يكونوا مؤمنين

4. If We had wished, We could have sent down upon them a sign from the heavens at which their necks would remain bowed in utter humility.

إن نشأ ننزل عليهم من السماء آية فظلت أعناقهم لها خاضعين

5. There did not come to them any new reminder from the Most-Compassionate (Lord), except that they turned away from it.

وما يأتيهم من ذكر من الرحمن محدث إلا كانوا عنه معرضين

6. They have indeed denied (the truth). So, the news of what they have been ridiculing will soon come to them.

فقد كذبوا فسيأتيهم أنباء ما كانوا به يستهزئون

7. Have they not looked at the earth, how much of every splendid kind of vegetation We have caused to grow in it?

أولم يروا إلى الأرض كم أنبتنا فيها من كل زوج كريم

8. There is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

9. Indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

10. And (remember) when your Lord called out to Musa (Moses), (saying:) ‘Go to the wrongdoing people,

وإذ نادى ربك موسى أن ائت القوم الظالمين

11. the people of Pharaoh. Will they not become God-conscious?’

قوم فرعون ألا يتقون

12. He (Moses) said: ‘My Lord! I fear that they will reject me,

قال رب إني أخاف أن يكذبون

13. my breast will constrict (from the stress), and my tongue will not express (itself) fluently. Therefore, send (Your Messenger Gabriel) to Harun ([Aaron] to make him my helper).

ويضيق صدري ولا ينطلق لساني فأرسل إلى هارون

14. They also have a charge against me, and I fear they may kill me.’

ولهم علي ذنب فأخاف أن يقتلون

15. He (Allah) said: ‘No (they will not). Go, both of you, with Our signs. We shall be with you, listening (to everything).

قال كلا فاذهبا بآياتنا إنا معكم مستمعون

16. So both of you approach Pharaoh and say: ‘We are indeed messengers of the Lord of the worlds.

فأتيا فرعون فقولا إنا رسول رب العالمين

17. (We are commanded to say:) ‘Send with us the Children of Israel.’’

أن أرسل معنا بني إسرائيل

18. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not stay several years of your life in our care?

قال ألم نربك فينا وليدا ولبثت فينا من عمرك سنين

19. Then you did the act of yours which you did, and you are one of the ungrateful.’

وفعلت فعلتك التي فعلت وأنت من الكافرين

20. He (Moses) said: ‘I did it, but I was unaware (that a single blow would take his life).

قال فعلتها إذا وأنا من الضالين

21. So, I fled from you, as I was afraid of you. Then, my Lord granted me divine wisdom and made me among the messengers.

ففررت منكم لما خفتكم فوهب لي ربي حكما وجعلني من المرسلين

22. And that blessing you are recounting to me, it was because you had enslaved the Children of Israel.’

وتلك نعمة تمنها علي أن عبدت بني إسرائيل

23. Pharaoh said: ‘And what is the Lord of the worlds?’

قال فرعون وما رب العالمين

24. He (Moses) said: ‘The Lord of all the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, if you have sure faith.’

قال رب السماوات والأرض وما بينهما إن كنتم موقنين

25. He (Pharaoh) said to those around him: ‘Do you not hear?’

قال لمن حوله ألا تستمعون

26. He (Moses) said: ‘Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers!’

قال ربكم ورب آبائكم الأولين

27. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Indeed your messenger, who has been sent to you, is surely crazy.’

قال إن رسولكم الذي أرسل إليكم لمجنون

28. He (Moses) said: ‘The Lord of the east and the west and whatever is between them, if you can understand.’

قال رب المشرق والمغرب وما بينهما إن كنتم تعقلون

29. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘If you take any other god besides me, I will most surely imprison you.’

قال لئن اتخذت إلها غيري لأجعلنك من المسجونين

30. He (Moses) said: ‘And what if I bring you something very clear?’

قال أولو جئتك بشيء مبين

31. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Bring it, then, if you are among the truthful.’

قال فأت به إن كنت من الصادقين

32. So he (Moses) threw down his staff; behold, it was a clear serpent.

فألقى عصاه فإذا هي ثعبان مبين

33. Then he drew out his hand (after putting it under his armpit), and behold, it was radiant white to the viewers.

ونزع يده فإذا هي بيضاء للناظرين

34. He (Pharaoh) said to the chiefs (who stood) around him: ‘This is indeed a very knowledgeable magician.

قال للملإ حوله إن هذا لساحر عليم

35. He wants to expel you from your land by his sorcery. So, what would you advise?’

يريد أن يخرجكم من أرضكم بسحره فماذا تأمرون

36. They said: ‘Leave him and his brother for a while and send heralds to the cities.

قالوا أرجه وأخاه وابعث في المدائن حاشرين

37. They shall bring you every expert magician.’

يأتوك بكل سحار عليم

38. So the magicians were brought together at the appointed time of a fixed day.

فجمع السحرة لميقات يوم معلوم

39. And the people were told: ‘Will you gather (for this occasion)?

وقيل للناس هل أنتم مجتمعون

40. Perhaps we may follow the magicians if they are the victors!’

لعلنا نتبع السحرة إن كانوا هم الغالبين

41. So when the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh: ‘Shall we indeed receive a reward if we are the victors?’

فلما جاء السحرة قالوا لفرعون أئن لنا لأجرا إن كنا نحن الغالبين

42. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Of course! Then indeed you shall be among those near (to me, by entering my inner court).’

قال نعم وإنكم إذا لمن المقربين

43. Musa (Moses) said to them (the magicians): ‘Throw down what you are going to throw.’

قال لهم موسى ألقوا ما أنتم ملقون

44. So they threw down their ropes and sticks and said: ‘By the might of Pharaoh, we shall surely be the victors.’

فألقوا حبالهم وعصيهم وقالوا بعزة فرعون إنا لنحن الغالبون

45. Then, Musa (Moses) threw down his staff; behold, it was swallowing up what they had faked.

فألقى موسى عصاه فإذا هي تلقف ما يأفكون

46. Then, the magicians were made to fall, prostrating.

فألقي السحرة ساجدين

47. They said: ‘We believe in the Lord of worlds,

قالوا آمنا برب العالمين

48. the Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron).’

رب موسى وهارون

49. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Do you believe in Him before I permit you? He (Moses) is indeed your chief who has taught you magic. So you shall soon know (about your end). I will surely cut off your hands and your feet from opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all.’

قال آمنتم له قبل أن آذن لكم إنه لكبيركم الذي علمكم السحر فلسوف تعلمون لأقطعن أيديكم وأرجلكم من خلاف ولأصلبنكم أجمعين

50. They said: ‘No harm (in it). Indeed, we are to return to our Lord.

قالوا لا ضير إنا إلى ربنا منقلبون

51. Indeed, we hope our Lord will forgive us our sins for being the first of the believers.’

إنا نطمع أن يغفر لنا ربنا خطايانا أن كنا أول المؤمنين

52. Then We revealed to Musa (Moses), (saying:) ‘Leave with My servants by night, for you shall indeed be pursued.’

وأوحينا إلى موسى أن أسر بعبادي إنكم متبعون

53. Then Pharaoh sent heralds to the cities.

فأرسل فرعون في المدائن حاشرين

54. (Announcing:) ‘These (Israelites) are indeed a small gang.

إن هؤلاء لشرذمة قليلون

55. And indeed, they are enraging us.

وإنهم لنا لغائظون

56. And indeed, all of us are alert.’

وإنا لجميع حاذرون

57. So We expelled them (i.e. Pharaoh and his people) from gardens and springs,

فأخرجناهم من جنات وعيون

58. and (from) treasures and noble dwellings.

وكنوز ومقام كريم

59. Thus it is, and We made the Children of Israel inherit them.

كذلك وأورثناها بني إسرائيل

60. Then they pursued them at sunrise.

فأتبعوهم مشرقين

61. So when the two parties saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: ‘Indeed we are overtaken.’

فلما تراء الجمعان قال أصحاب موسى إنا لمدركون

62. He (Moses) said: ‘Certainly not! Indeed, my Lord is with me. He will guide me (to the way out).’

قال كلا إن معي ربي سيهدين

63. Then We revealed to Musa (Moses): ‘Strike the sea with your staff.’ So, it split (into parts). And each part was as if it were a great mountain.

فأوحينا إلى موسى أن اضرب بعصاك البحر فانفلق فكان كل فرق كالطود العظيم

64. So We brought the others (i.e. Pharaoh and his people) closer.

وأزلفنا ثم الآخرين

65. We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him.

وأنجينا موسى ومن معه أجمعين

66. Then We drowned the others (i.e. Pharaoh and his people).

ثم أغرقنا الآخرين

67. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them were not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

68. And indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

69. And recite to them the story of Ibrahim (Abraham).

واتل عليهم نبأ إبراهيم

70. When he told his (foster) father and his people: ‘What are you worshipping?’

* It was his uncle and not his real father who brought him up. In view of that he used to call him father. His name was Azar, whereas his real father’s name was Tarakh.

إذ قال لأبيه وقومه ما تعبدون

71. They said: ‘We worship idols, and We will always remain devoted to them.’

قالوا نعبد أصناما فنظل لها عاكفين

72. He (Abraham) said: ‘Do they hear you when you call (them)?

قال هل يسمعونكم إذ تدعون

73. Or do they bring you any benefit or cause you any harm?’

أو ينفعونكم أو يضرون

74. They said: ‘Rather we found our fathers doing likewise.’

قالوا بل وجدنا آباءنا كذلك يفعلون

75. He (Abraham) said: ‘Have you (ever) realised what you have been worshipping,

قال أفرأيتم ما كنتم تعبدون

76. you and your ancestors?’

أنتم وآباؤكم الأقدمون

77. They are indeed my enemies. But the Lord of all worlds,

فإنهم عدو لي إلا رب العالمين

78. Who created me—He guides me.

الذي خلقني فهو يهدين

79. And He is the One Who gives me to eat and gives me to drink.

والذي هو يطعمني ويسقين

80. And when I get sick, He is the One Who cures me.

وإذا مرضت فهو يشفين

81. And Who will cause me to die, then He will bring me to life (again).

والذي يميتني ثم يحيين

82. And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgement.

والذي أطمع أن يغفر لي خطيئتي يوم الدين

83. My Lord! Grant me unerring judgement (and wisdom), and join me with the righteous.

رب هب لي حكما وألحقني بالصالحين

84. And bless me with an honourable reputation among the later generations.

واجعل لي لسان صدق في الآخرين

85. And place me among the heirs of the Garden of Bliss.

واجعلني من ورثة جنة النعيم

86. Forgive my (foster) father, for he is from those who have gone astray.

واغفر لأبي إنه كان من الضالين

87. Do not disgrace me on the Day all will be resurrected,

ولا تخزني يوم يبعثون

88. the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit (any person),

يوم لا ينفع مال ولا بنون

89. except for him who appears before Allah with a sound heart.’

إلا من أتى الله بقلب سليم

90. And Paradise will be brought near the God-conscious,

وأزلفت الجنة للمتقين

91. and the Hellfire will be displayed to the deviant.

وبرزت الجحيم للغاوين

92. Then, they shall be told: ‘Where are those (idols) you used to worship,

وقيل لهم أين ما كنتم تعبدون

93. besides Allah. Are they helping you or helping each other?’

من دون الله هل ينصرونكم أو ينتصرون

94. Then they shall be toppled into it—they (the idols) and the deviant (people),

فكبكبوا فيها هم والغاوون

95. and the troops of Iblis altogether.

وجنود إبليس أجمعون

96. There, they will say, disputing (with their idols):

قالوا وهم فيها يختصمون

97. ‘By Allah, indeed we were in manifest error,

تالله إن كنا لفي ضلال مبين

98. when we made you equal with the Lord of all worlds.

إذ نسويكم برب العالمين

99. None caused us to go astray but the guilty.

وما أضلنا إلا المجرمون

100. So now we have no intercessors,

فما لنا من شافعين

101. nor any sympathetic friend.

ولا صديق حميم

102. If we could return (to the world) once again, we would be among the believers.’

فلو أن لنا كرة فنكون من المؤمنين

103. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them were not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

104. And indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

105. The people of Nuh (Noah) rejected the messengers.

كذبت قوم نوح المرسلين

106. When their (kinship) brother Nuh (Noah) said to them: ‘Will you not be God-conscious?

إذ قال لهم أخوهم نوح ألا تتقون

107. Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger (sent) to you.

إني لكم رسول أمين

108. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

109. I do not ask you for any reward for this (message). My reward lies only with the Lord of all worlds.

وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن أجري إلا على رب العالمين

110. So be God-conscious and obey me.’

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

111. They said: ‘Shall we believe in you while the lowest people (of our society) follow you?’

قالوا أنؤمن لك واتبعك الأرذلون

112. He said: ‘What knowledge do I have about what they used to do?

قال وما علمي بما كانوا يعملون

113. Their account is only with my Lord if you could perceive (what is true honour)!

إن حسابهم إلا على ربي لو تشعرون

114. And I am not going to drive the believers away.

وما أنا بطارد المؤمنين

115. I am just a manifest warner.’

إن أنا إلا نذير مبين

116. They said: ‘If you do not stop (your preaching), O Nuh (Noah), you shall indeed be stoned (to death).’

قالوا لئن لم تنته يا نوح لتكونن من المرجومين

117. He said: ‘My Lord! Indeed, my people have rejected me.

قال رب إن قومي كذبون

118. So judge between me and them, and deliver me and the believers who are with me!’

فافتح بيني وبينهم فتحا ونجني ومن معي من المؤمنين

119. So We delivered him and those with him in the fully laden Ark.

فأنجيناه ومن معه في الفلك المشحون

120. Then We drowned the rest afterwards.

ثم أغرقنا بعد الباقين

121. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

122. And indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

123. (The people of) ‘Ad rejected the messengers,

كذبت عاد المرسلين

124. when their (kinship) brother Hud said to them: ‘Will you not be God-conscious?

إذ قال لهم أخوهم هود ألا تتقون

125. Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger (sent) to you.

إني لكم رسول أمين

126. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

127. And I do not ask you for any reward for this (message). My reward lies only with the Lord of all worlds.

وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن أجري إلا على رب العالمين

128. Do you frivolously build on every prominent place a monument?

أتبنون بكل ريع آية تعبثون

129. You construct castles as if you will live (in the world) forever.

وتتخذون مصانع لعلكم تخلدون

130. And whenever you seize (someone for punishment), you seize like ruthless tyrants.

وإذا بطشتم بطشتم جبارين

131. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

132. And be conscious of Him, Who has provided you with (all the good things) that you know.

واتقوا الذي أمدكم بما تعلمون

133. He has aided you with (an abundance of) cattle and children,

أمدكم بأنعام وبنين

134. and gardens and springs.

وجنات وعيون

135. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a grievous day.’

إني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم عظيم

136. They said: ‘It is the same to us whether you warn us or be not among the warners.

قالوا سواء علينا أوعظت أم لم تكن من الواعظين

137. This is nothing but the traditions of the ancients.

إن هذا إلا خلق الأولين

138. And we will never be punished.’

وما نحن بمعذبين

139. So they rejected him (i.e. Hud), and We destroyed them. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

فكذبوه فأهلكناهم إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

140. Indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

141. (The people of) Thamud rejected the messengers,

كذبت ثمود المرسلين

142. when their (kinship) brother Salih said to them: ‘Will you not be God-conscious?

إذ قال لهم أخوهم صالح ألا تتقون

143. Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger (sent) to you.

إني لكم رسول أمين

144. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

145. I do not ask you for any reward for this (message). My reward lies only with the Lord of all worlds.

وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن أجري إلا على رب العالمين

146. (Do you think that) you will be left secure (forever) in whatever you have here:

أتتركون في ما هاهنا آمنين

147. In gardens and springs,

في جنات وعيون

148. and farms and date palms, having stalks laden with ripe fruits?

وزروع ونخل طلعها هضيم

149. And you skillfully hew houses in the mountains.

وتنحتون من الجبال بيوتا فارهين

150. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

151. And do not obey the dictates of the extravagant,

ولا تطيعوا أمر المسرفين

152. who cause corruption in the land and do not set matters aright.’

الذين يفسدون في الأرض ولا يصلحون

153. They said: ‘Indeed, you are one of the bewitched.

قالوا إنما أنت من المسحرين

154. You are just a human being like us. So bring us some sign if you are among the truthful.’

ما أنت إلا بشر مثلنا فأت بآية إن كنت من الصادقين

155. He (Salih) said: ‘This is a she-camel. She shall have her turn to drink (water), and you shall have your turn to drink on known days.

قال هذه ناقة لها شرب ولكم شرب يوم معلوم

156. And do not touch her with evil intention, lest the punishment of a terrible day overtakes you.’

ولا تمسوها بسوء فيأخذكم عذاب يوم عظيم

157. But they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful (of killing her).

فعقروها فأصبحوا نادمين

158. So the punishment overtook them. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

فأخذهم العذاب إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

159. Indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

160. The people of Lut (Lot) rejected the messengers,

كذبت قوم لوط المرسلين

161. when their (kinship) brother Lut (Lot) said to them: ‘Will you not be God-conscious?

إذ قال لهم أخوهم لوط ألا تتقون

162. Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger (sent) to you.

إني لكم رسول أمين

163. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

164. And I do not ask you for any reward for this (message). My reward lies only with the Lord of all worlds.

وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن أجري إلا على رب العالمين

165. Do you come only to males, among all people (to satisfy your sexual desire),

أتأتون الذكران من العالمين

166. abandoning your wives whom your Lord has created for you? Instead, you are a transgressing people.’

وتذرون ما خلق لكم ربكم من أزواجكم بل أنتم قوم عادون

167. They said: ‘If you do not stop this, O Lut (Lot), you will surely be among the expelled.’

قالوا لئن لم تنته يا لوط لتكونن من المخرجين

168. He said: ‘Indeed, I detest your conduct.

قال إني لعملكم من القالين

169. My Lord! Save me and my family from what they are doing.’

رب نجني وأهلي مما يعملون

170. So We saved him and all his family,

فنجيناه وأهله أجمعين

171. except an old woman who remained behind.

إلا عجوزا في الغابرين

172. Then We destroyed the others.

ثم دمرنا الآخرين

173. And We rained upon them a rain (of stones). So how devastating was the rain of the warned!

وأمطرنا عليهم مطرا فساء مطر المنذرين

174. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

175. Indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

176. The People of al-Ayka (the forest dwellers) rejected the messengers,

كذب أصحاب الأيكة المرسلين

177. when Shu‘ayb said to them: ‘Will you not be God-conscious?

إذ قال لهم شعيب ألا تتقون

178. Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger (sent) to you.

إني لكم رسول أمين

179. So be God-conscious and obey me.

فاتقوا الله وأطيعون

180. And I do not ask you for any reward for this (message). My reward lies only with the Lord of all worlds.

وما أسألكم عليه من أجر إن أجري إلا على رب العالمين

181. Give full measure. And do not be among those who cause loss to others.

أوفوا الكيل ولا تكونوا من المخسرين

182. Weigh (things) with accurate scales.

وزنوا بالقسطاس المستقيم

183. And do not cheat the people in (weighing) their goods. And do not act corruptly upon the earth, causing mischief.

ولا تبخسوا الناس أشياءهم ولا تعثوا في الأرض مفسدين

184. And be conscious of Him Who created you and the earlier generations.’

واتقوا الذي خلقكم والجبلة الأولين

185. They said: ‘You are simply one of the bewitched.

قالوا إنما أنت من المسحرين

186. You are nothing but a human being like us. And we indeed consider you to be among the liars.

وما أنت إلا بشر مثلنا وإن نظنك لمن الكاذبين

187. So make pieces of the heaven fall upon us if you are among the truthful.’

فأسقط علينا كسفا من السماء إن كنت من الصادقين

188. He (Shu‘ayb) said: ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing.’

قال ربي أعلم بما تعملون

189. So they rejected him, and then the punishment of the day of the shady cloud overtook them. No doubt, that was the punishment of a terrible day.

فكذبوه فأخذهم عذاب يوم الظلة إنه كان عذاب يوم عظيم

190. There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.

إن في ذلك لآية وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين

191. And indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful.

وإن ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم

192. Indeed, this (Qur’an) is a revelation of the Lord of all worlds.

وإنه لتنزيل رب العالمين

193. The Trustworthy Spirit (Gabriel) has descended with it,

نزل به الروح الأمين

194. upon your heart so that you may be among the warners.

على قلبك لتكون من المنذرين

195. (It has been revealed) in a clear Arabic language.

بلسان عربي مبين

196. Indeed, it is (foretold) in the scriptures of the ancients.

وإنه لفي زبر الأولين

197. Is it not enough proof for them that the learned men of the Children of Israel (already) recognise it?

أولم يكن لهم آية أن يعلمه علماء بني إسرائيل

198. Had We revealed it to some non-Arab,

ولو نزلناه على بعض الأعجمين

199. who would have recited it to them (in fluent Arabic), they would still not have believed in it.

فقرأه عليهم ما كانوا به مؤمنين

200. This is how We cause (denial) to pass through the hearts of the guilty.

كذلك سلكناه في قلوب المجرمين

201. They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

لا يؤمنون به حتى يروا العذاب الأليم

202. So, it will come upon them suddenly while they are unaware.

فيأتيهم بغتة وهم لا يشعرون

203. Then they will say: ‘Shall we be granted respite?’

فيقولوا هل نحن منظرون

204. Do they seek to hasten Our punishment?

أفبعذابنا يستعجلون

205. Just think: if We let them enjoy (themselves) for some years,

أفرأيت إن متعناهم سنين

206. then (the torment) which they have been promised comes upon them,

ثم جاءهم ما كانوا يوعدون

207. then that (respite) which they enjoyed would not avail them.

ما أغنى عنهم ما كانوا يمتعون

208. We have never destroyed any town without having (sent) warners to it,

وما أهلكنا من قرية إلا لها منذرون

209. as a reminder (from Us). And We were never unjust.

ذكرى وما كنا ظالمين

210. And the devils have not descended with it (i.e. the Qur’an).

وما تنزلت به الشياطين

211. Neither is it befitting for them, nor are they capable (of it).

وما ينبغي لهم وما يستطيعون

212. Indeed, they are strictly barred from (even) hearing (it).

إنهم عن السمع لمعزولون

213. So do not invoke another god along with Allah, lest you should be among the punished.

فلا تدع مع الله إلها آخر فتكون من المعذبين

214. And warn the nearest of your kinsfolk.

وأنذر عشيرتك الأقربين

215. And lower your wing (of kindness) to the believers who follow you.

واخفض جناحك لمن اتبعك من المؤمنين

216. But if they disobey you, say: ‘I am absolved of what you do.’

فإن عصوك فقل إني بريء مما تعملون

217. And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the All-Merciful,

وتوكل على العزيز الرحيم

218. Who sees you when you stand (for prayer),

الذي يراك حين تقوم

219. and your moving over and over among those who prostrate themselves (before Allah).

وتقلبك في الساجدين

220. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

إنه هو السميع العليم

221. Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

هل أنبئكم على من تنزل الشياطين

222. They descend upon every sinful liar,

تنزل على كل أفاك أثيم

223. who readily lends an ear (to Satanic whispers), and most of them are liars (when passing on information to people).

يلقون السمع وأكثرهم كاذبون

224. As for the poets, only the deviants follow them.

والشعراء يتبعهم الغاوون

225. Have you not seen that they wander in every valley (of imagination)?

ألم تر أنهم في كل واد يهيمون

226. And that they say what they do not do?

وأنهم يقولون ما لا يفعلون

227. Except for those (poets) who believe, perform righteous deeds, remember Allah abundantly and defend themselves (by inspiring zeal and courage) after they were oppressed. And the wrongdoers will soon know to what evil end they will return.

إلا الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات وذكروا الله كثيرا وانتصروا من بعد ما ظلموا وسيعلم الذين ظلموا أي منقلب ينقلبون
