* The idolaters, out of their pagan mentality, regarded women as lacking intelligence and would not allow them to be heard in disputes. The Qur’an has thus rejected their claim by using their own argument against them.
* According to the eminent exegetes like Imam al-Qurtubi, al-Jami‘ li-Ahkam al-Qur’an (16:111), Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim (4:134), and al-Shawkani, Tafsir Fath al-Qadir (4:563) the words azwaju-kum in this Verse also imply ‘intimate companions’ in addition to ‘wives’. On the basis of this authority, the word azwaj has been translated as ‘intimate companions’ instead of ‘wives’.
